Individuals above 60 years of age are also at the highest risk of COVID-19. 

Rapidly Evolving COVID-19 Outbreak needs to be Closely Monitored 

To evaluate the potential health implications from COVID-19 to the pulmonary fibrosis community in the United States, it is essential to keep tabs on the evolving COVID-19 outbreak. 

According to a recent survey, at least 200,000 people have been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in the United States, but it was found that more than 8 in 10 people were unaware of the symptoms of this lung disease. Being a progressive disease, pulmonary fibrosis causes scarring in the lungs, and symptoms include persistent dry cough, fatigue, and shortness of breath. People suffering from respiratory diseases including pulmonary fibrosis are more likely to develop severe complications from novel coronavirus illness (COVID-19) if they get infected, and therefore, they should seek medical attention as soon as the symptoms appear. COVID-19 leads to inflammation and injury within the lungs and in some people with a compromised immune system or a chronic health condition, it can progress into a serious illness. 

Generally, the symptoms of COVID-19 develop between 2 -14 days of exposure to the novel coronavirus. While symptoms vary from mild flu-like illness to severe breathing difficulty, most common symptoms include:

People Living with Pulmonary Fibrosis should take Special Precautions

As people living with pulmonary fibrosis are considered to be at higher risk of COVID-19 and more likely to develop a more severe infection than the others, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised people with pulmonary fibrosis to take extra precautions to protect themselves and limit complications. Apart from personal hygiene habits and social distancing measures, people with pulmonary fibrosis need to take up these preventive measures:

  • Stocking up on essential items such as medications and other supplies that will last for several weeks
  • Avoiding non-essential travel
  • Staying at home
  • If symptoms similar to a viral illness develop and if there is a travel history to a high-risk area in the past 40 days, self-isolate at home for 14 days. 
  • Maintain a daily care regimen and call a health care provider if COVID-19-like symptoms develop. 

Family members and Caregivers of People with Pulmonary Fibrosis play an Important Role

To prevent COVID-19 spread, the family members and caregivers of people with pulmonary fibrosis should take extra care of themselves and follow appropriate precautions if they develop COVID-19 symptoms. Self-isolation is the best method to avoid COVID-19 spread. The caregivers of people with pulmonary fibrosis should monitor their health status constantly and help them stock necessary medications and other supplies for several weeks. To minimize trips to the grocery store, it is essential to store non-perishable food items. 

During this COVID-19 outbreak, pulmonary rehabilitation appointments may be avoided, instead, home exercise programs may be followed after discussing with the pulmonary rehabilitation center. 

Management of COVID-19 outbreak

Currently, health organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the CDC, and other infectious disease researchers are collaborating to study the transmission of the novel coronavirus and to develop a vaccine to prevent COVID-19, without which containment of this virus would be difficult.

 Most symptoms of COVID-19 are mild and nearly 80% of people who get infected by this virus recover without any specialized treatment. People who already suffered from tension or cluster headaches were at a 21 percent higher risk of developing hypothyroidism than the rest of the population. The risk of contracting hypothyroidism was even greater for people with migraines. Their risk was 41 percent.

When Katie Luckraft was 12, she began to feeling fatigued that would leave her incapacitated. Her blood pressure was unstable, her heart rate would dangerously increase when standing and she would even experience fainting spells. Doctors told her that her problem was hormonal and related to the onset of puberty. Some even told her mother that she needed to see a psychiatrist. It was not until her mother took her to a cardiologist that she was diagnosed with dysautonomia, or more specifically, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).


Dysautonomia is a condition where the body’s autonomic functions, such as temperature regulation and blood pressure, fail. In Katie’s case, her blood pressure and heart rate rapidly increase when she changes positions too quickly. POTS is diagnosed in children and teenagers like Katie, when there is a 40 beats per minute (bpm)increase in heart rate.


In adults, POTS is diagnosed when the heart rate increases more than 30 bpm or over 120 bpm, within the first 10 minutes of standing. Women are 80 percent more likely than men to be affected, and usually develop POTS between the ages of 15 and 50. There is no cure, and despite the fact that POTS occurs in 1 out of 100 teenagers and in 3 million adults, it is often misdiagnosed as “hormonal problems” or “depression.”

Too often serious medical conditions that primarily impact women are disregarded. Doctors attribute these complex conditions to anxiety or depression, or relate the patient’s symptoms to premenstrual syndrome or menopause. POTS was only clinically defined by the Mayo Clinic in 1993 by the Mayo Clinic, and many doctors may be unaware of its existence or are not trained in how to make an accurate diagnosis.

Reasons for the common misdiagnosis of POTS may legitimately have more to do with the complex array of signs and symptoms, as opposed to unsympathetic or incompetent physicians. Many patients like Katie, present with an abnormal heart rate increase when standing. Most of them feeling fatigued all the time.

Conversely, POTS patients may experience a decrease or even no change in blood pressure when standing. Blood tests usually reveal low blood volume and high levels of plasma norepinephrine when standing. And about half of POTS patients experience a condition called small fiber neuropathy that causes sensations as “pin and needles,” tingling, and numbness.

POTS patients often experience extreme fatigue, heart palpitations, headaches and lightheadedness. They can present with nausea, intolerance to physical exertion or exercise, shaking, fainting, cold or pain sensations in arms and legs, chest pain and shortness of breath. POTS patients can develop a reddish or purple discoloration in their legs when they stand, due to blood pulling or poor circulation. The discoloration usually vanishes when the patients returned to a reclined position.

While Katie’s condition relegates her to not being able to work and a wheel chair, many POTS patients experience mild symptoms and can have normal work, school and recreational activities. Like Katie, 25 percent of POTS patients are unable to work and are considered to be disabled. Some patients may even have difficulty with lifestyle activities such as bathing, eating or sitting upright because they feeling fatigued.

Each patient with POTS is different, and treatments vary depending on the severity. Katie treats her POTS by making sure her body has enough salt, drinking plenty of fluids and wearing compression socks. Many are like Katie and consume the recommended two to three liters of fluid per day and consume between 3,000 mg to 10,000 mg of salt.

Other treatments may include raising the head of the bed to conserve blood volume, reclined exercises such as rowing and recumbent bicycling and eating a healthy diet. Some POTS patients have to take medications such as Fludrocortisone, Beta Blockers, Midodrine, Clonidine, Pyridostigmine, Benzodiazepines, SSRIs, SNRIs, Erythropoietin and Octreotide.

Panic attacks can last between 10 to 30 minutes. People who suffer from this disorder often fear another attack and that can lead to disability or limitation of daily routine. These fears can lead people into isolation. Contact a therapist or your doctor, this will need care and follow-up.

How to handle a panic attack:

• Breathing and relaxation exercises: These should be done on a daily basis. Try to always breathe deeply and slowly, focusing on inhaling and exhaling. Learning breathing techniques, yoga, and meditation may be helpful.

• Exercise: Daily exercise is recommended to lessen anxiety levels and increase oxygenation in the body.

• Avoid stimulants in your diet: Caffeine, alcohol, chocolate, medications, and some illegal drugs can lead to panic attacks, even for people who use these substances on a daily basis.

• Recognize the cues: You may be able to identify your personal triggers. If you think you can’t handle being in a subway full of people, you probably can’t.

• Re-structure your negative thoughts: Try to rationalize what is happening during the attack, try to be positive, know its going a temporary problem and you are going to be alright.

• Ask for help: Look for professional help. Friends can be a possible support, however health specialist are more knowledgeable about what is happening. Confront your problems and try to speak about this with a therapist or counselor, there are drugs that can alleviate symptoms.

• Don’t be ashamed, you are not alone. Everyone suffers from extreme anxiety and fear from time to time. Look it up in forums, search the internet, find different perspectives.

When people hear the words chest pain they often think heart attack, the symptoms of which can include a strange feeling in the chest, pressure, sweating, shortness of breath, nausea or vomiting, pain, sudden weakness, and a fast or irregular heartbeat.

While it’s true that the pain can be a symptom of a heart attack, pain in the chest can be a symptom of many other conditions such as other heart problems, like angina, panic attacks, digestive problems such as heartburn or esophageal disorders, sore muscles, lung diseases such as pneumonia, pleurisy, pulmonary embolism, or even costochondritis – an inflammation of joints in your chest.

There are many different causes of the pain, some of these are life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.

Home treatment is not appropriate for chest pain if pain occurs with symptoms of a heart attack.
Signs that sharp chest pain isn’t a heart blockage:

• Sharp chest pains that get worse with taking a breath
• Sharp chest pain that is very short in duration – just a few seconds
• Sharp stabbing pains that are worse when you press on the chest
• When movement aggravates your sharp pains

Hibiscus tea
