Alcohol Abuse detox

How to Safely Detox From Alcohol At Home

If you happen to be an alcohol addict, it can reach to a point when you want to quit for good. You can no longer stand blacking out, wasting your cash, experiencing hangovers, and unable to tell what happened the previous night. You don’t want to upset your partner, friends, or family members again. Your main goal is to drop the habit. This happens to be the initial step toward recovery. The challenge is how to cope with alcohol detox.

Alcohol addiction not only affects the involved party, but also those around you. The good news is that the safest and fastest way to deal with it is to adopt a detox plan at the comfort of your home. However, it is worth keeping in mind that a home alcohol detox plan can be dangerous. That’s why most medical professionals recommend detox at a rehab facility if you are addicted.

Delirium tremens (DT) is one of the most dangerous symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. In fact, it is potentially fatal.

Quitting alcohol the cold turkey way isn’t a walk in the park and not many people can manage on their own. A detox plan along with an alcohol withdrawal treatment should be administered by medical experts at various rehab institutions all over the country.

Alcohol Detox at Home

If you are struggling with alcohol addiction, it is worth to consider detox from alcohol at home. Most people consider at-home detox because they can easily handle the painful experience. Although alcohol detoxification at home feels more comfortable, it can have some risks. It can develop to a serious medical situation with dreadful consequences.

A good number of alcoholics often try to self-detox at some point but may not succeed with the first attempt. Here are some of the things you should consider when detoxing at home:

Get rid of alcohol from your home

This sounds obvious but it is a critical step when self-detoxing at home. This will ensure that you don’t fall into temptations when you start experiencing withdrawal symptoms. It is also advisable to keep off from your alcoholic friends or visiting pubs.

Change your schedule

Not everyone can afford to change their schedule, but it is essential because you need to focus on your recovery. You may have to shift work for days or weeks to put off your responsibilities for a while and concentrate on this critical journey.

Seek support

Don’t think that you no support is required because you are detoxing at home. Involve a family member or a friend to ensure that you are safe throughout the process. They can be helpful in case your withdrawal symptoms worsen.

Diet During Alcohol Detox

You are most likely not to be focused on what to eat when withdrawing from alcohol. Healthy eating is critical because alcohol affects how food is metabolized and utilized by your body.

Stay Hydrated

Alcohol withdrawal can trigger a number of symptoms, such as loss of appetite, fatigue, depression, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms typically last for up to 72 hours and can affect your eating ability. Staying hydrated during the early withdrawal stages is very important. Gelatin, ice pops, water, juice, and broth are some good options.

Eat a balanced diet

Eating a healthy diet with all the essential nutrients and minerals is recommendable when withdrawing from alcohol. Consume plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.

Supplement with minerals and vitamins

Supplementing with minerals and vitamins helps to eliminate toxins from your body. They include multivitamins, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, and magnesium.

Final Word

Alcohol detoxing at home seems the best course if you have financial constraints although it can be a very risky route. The detox process involves withdrawal, and withdrawal can result in physical symptoms which can be very severe. It is therefore recommendable to have a medical professional you can contact in case of the uncertain.

Alcohol Abuse

Understanding the Road to Recovery from Drug and Alcohol Addiction

When you or someone you love is working to overcome an addiction to drugs or alcohol, educating yourself on the treatment options available can help make the process smoother. Understanding the difference between inpatient and outpatient treatment and knowing what to expect during the recovery process can help you experience successful sobriety.

Understanding the Road to Recovery from Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Overcoming an Addiction

The road to recovery may not be an easy one, but there are certain steps you can anticipate as you gain ground in living a healthier life. First, there is the step you’ve likely already taken if you are searching for treatment options–and that is determining if you have an addiction. Discovering that you exhibit any of the common signs and symptoms of addiction to drugs and alcohol is an indicator that something is wrong. Knowing that you need help at the beginning of the recovery process.

CHOOSING TREATMENT: Next, you will want to decide if inpatient or outpatient treatment is going to work best for your needs. Outpatient options allow you to receive the necessary care, counsel, and doctor supervision while living in the community rather than in a facility. Inpatient treatment provides all of the necessities of addiction therapy as well as daily living requirements all in one. If you choose an inpatient recovery center (like Beachside Rehab in Florida), you can expect to find counseling, therapy, doctor supervision, a variety of programs, and accommodations. You should look for a setting that has a vision for you as a person on a long-term scale, with a treatment plan that includes everything from detox to aftercare.

After choosing the best form of treatment to match your need, your road to sobriety begins. Many people with an addiction experience a time of detoxification (or detox), when the toxins that have built up in the body are flushed out and they experience a variety of physical and psychological symptoms. Some of these can include fever, shaking, nausea and vomiting, insomnia, paranoia, hallucinations, and more. Having proper care during this phase can be critical to assuring long-term success as you overcome an addiction.

During the next treatment phase, you will be busy as you actively work toward restoring the life you deserve. Your body will be healing physically, preferably under a doctor’s supervision and close care. Recovery is a delicate process that requires support from every angle–including having a medical team that understands addictions and is trained in the best ways to treat your specific needs. In the phase of active treatment, you will also begin to learn foundational psychological tools for success. Through counseling and therapy, you will gain a deeper understanding of how to overcome the addiction that has previously kept you restricted.

What Comes After the Treatment

The reality of overcoming an addiction is that it is a lifelong process. Even after you have received initial treatment, have undergone counseling, and have received medical care there is still work to be done.

Living a life of sobriety requires you to make daily (sometimes hourly) choices to not use the alcohol or drug that your body is craving. Being sober is accomplished by using the tools you learned during active treatment and applying them to the life you are living. Surrounding yourself with a strong support system and staying focused on goals to help you grow are other ways you can encourage your own road to continued recovery.

Breast cancer is a form of cancer that has developed within the tissue of the breasts. This is caused by a mutation in the genes which helps regulate cells and keep them healthy. Usually, the cells in our bodies are replaced as old cells die, however, cancer allows the cells to keep multiplying, and this process creates a tumor.

Here Is How Eating 2 Spoons of Flax Seeds Can Protect You From Breast Cancer

RELATED ARTICLE: 5 Hidden Breast Cancer Triggers

Tumors can be benign, which means they are not cancerous or they can be malignant, which means they are cancerous. When malignant tumors are left untreated, they can continue to grow and even spread to other parts of the body. Usually, breast cancer forms in the milk ducts of the breasts known as the lobules. However, breast cancer can also appear in the fatty and connective tissues of the breast. Over time, breast cancer can spread through the breast and into the lymph nodes located in the underarm.

It is estimated that 12% or 1 in 8 women will face invasive breast cancer within her lifetime. An expected death rate due to breast cancer is approximately 40,290 women for the year of 2015. These numbers have been steadily dropping over the years and it is believed to be due to better preventative care. For those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, there are many life-altering decisions that will have to be made and a new consciousness about their health will be in their mind at all times. This is why many people look to natural medicines and therapies to help with their treatment of cancer. A natural super-food that has sparked the interest of those suffering from cancer is flax seed. This grain is also used for a variety of healing properties that it is known to contain.

• Possible protection against heart disease
• Lower cholesterol
• Weight loss
• Stabilized blood sugar
• Improved digestive health
• Detoxification
• Healthy hair, skin and nails
• Decrease insulin resistance and protect against diabetes
• Prevent or slow the movement of melanoma
• Excellent source of omega-3 fat for vegetarians

One of the most talked about potential cancer-fighting foods is flax seed. This grain is readily available as flour, meal, and seeds. Flax seed is an excellent source of lignans, which has a weak estrogen effect. This is important to note because when a weak estrogen substance is consumed, it can take the place of the strong estrogen effect in the breast cell’s estrogen receptors. This helps act as an anti-estrogen to help work against the hormone sensitive breast cancer.

A Canadian study has recently showed that consumption of flax seeds in postmenopausal women reduced the chance of cancer by an amazing 28% and the consumption of bread containing flax reduced the risk to 26% in both postmenopausal and premenopausal women. This shows that flax seed is a simple and natural food that can help prevent and even treat breast cancer in addition to the various other health benefits that are known as well.

Simple Things You Can Do Right Now to Heal your Thyroid Problems!

Simple Things You Can Do Right Now to Heal your Thyroid Problems!

Simple Things You Can Do Right Now to Heal your Thyroid Problems!

The thyroid gland is the master of metabolism. It’s a butterfly-shaped organ situated just above your collarbone. Run your hand down the front of your neck to just below the bulge. This is the site of your thyroid.

Heal Your Thyroid Naturally

The thyroid releases hormones that govern bodily functions such as:

  • brainpower
  • bone metabolism
  • digestion
  • heart rate
  • temperature
  • weight

The thyroid releases three key hormones:

  • T3 – regulates your body’s heart rate, temperature, and energy
  • T4 – crucial for growth
  • Calcitonin – involved in the metabolism of calcium and bone

Iodine is needed to produce T3 and T4. It’s a trace element the body is unable to manufacture. Iodine needs to be taken as food. For the body to use T4, it must first be converted to T3.

The thyroid can malfunction in two major ways. It can go into overdrive, resulting in elevated hormone levels. Conversely, it can come up short. Hormone overproduction is termed hyperthyroidism. Substandard function is called hypothyroidism.

RELATED ARTICLE: Seven Signs Your Diet is Ruining Your Thyroid Gland

The medical term for this disorder is thyroiditis. It’s the most common type of hypothyroidism in the US. Though it can occur at any age, it is most prevalent in women between the ages of 30 and 50. HD is an autoimmune disorder. When the immune system malfunctions, it mistakenly attacks body cells. In the case of HD, thyroid tissue becomes inflamed and is slowly destroyed. This leads to low hormone levels. Signs of hypothyroidism are:

  • pale, puffy face
  • dry skin
  • thinning hair
  • fatigue
  • constipation
  • depression
  • hoarse voice
  • difficulty swallowing
  • muscle aches and stiffness
  • acute sensitivity to cold
  • unexplained weight gain
  • high cholesterol

Blood tests measure hormone and cholesterol levels. They also identify abnormal antibodies, indicating misfiring of the immune system. Anterior neck swelling is another red flag. This is a sign of thyroid enlargement, termed goiter. If HD is diagnosed, your primary care physician may refer you to an endocrinologist, a doctor specializing in hormonal disorders.

Research suggests that HD is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental triggers. Examples are:

  • genes
  • pregnancy
  • radiation exposure
  • toxic pesticides and fertilizer
  • bacterial and viral infections

The conventional treatment for HD is hormone replacement medication. However, it doesn’t resolve the underlying cause of the autoimmune disorder. For this reason, many people seek natural solutions to restore proper immune function. Natural treatment focuses on helping the liver do its job of detoxification. Following is a protocol used by holistic endocrinologists.

Diet plays an important role in cooling inflammation and balancing hormones. Dietary management includes specific foods to consume and avoid.

Food Focus

  • Protein – Aim for 20 grams of protein at each meal. Protein ferries T3 into cells and regulates thyroid function. Ideal sources include eggs, beans, nut butters, quinoa, salmon, and whey.
  • Healthy Fats – Try to consume four tablespoons of healthy fats per day. Examples are avocado, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, and pumpkin seeds. Fatty acids are the building blocks of cell membranes. Your body also uses them to produce prostaglandins. These are compounds with hormone-like effects. They help reduce inflammation.
  • Selenium – This mineral boosts T3 production. Excellent sources of selenium are Brazil nuts, pinto beans, and sunflower seeds.
  • Vitamin B12 – Research shows that 30 percent of people with HD have a Vitamin B12 deficiency. Bolster your diet with B12 from eggs, dairy, and salmon.
  • Vitamin D – Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to HD. Vitamin D shuttles thyroid hormone into cells. It also normalizes erratic immune function. Dial up Vitamin D in the form of mushrooms, salmon, eggs, fortified dairy, and Swiss cheese.
  • Glutathione – This is the “mother of all antioxidants.” It’s a powerful cell protector. Glutathione strengthens the immune system and heals thyroid tissue. It also helps the liver neutralize toxic chemicals. Foods that spur glutathione production include asparagus, garlic, onions, peaches, and whey.

What to Avoid

  • Gluten – This protein is found in wheat, barley, bulgur, couscous, rye, and spelt. Gluten is similar in molecular structure to thyroid tissue. In HD, gluten is confusing to the immune system. It considers gluten a threat and goes after the thyroid instead.
  • Coffee – Caffeine worsens HD symptoms. Those of us who love coffee found it challenging to give up our beloved joe. If this applies to you, knowing the following effects of caffeine may help you quit coffee. Caffeine increases blood sugar and the stress hormone cortisol. It inhibits the conversion of T4 to T3. Coffee is similar in protein structure to gluten. It percolates thyroid tissue.
  • Sugar – Refined sugar and carbohydrates trigger inflammation. They hinder white blood cells from destroying bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances. The damage begins within 30 minutes of eating sugar and lasts for five hours! Sugar also causes spikes in the hormone insulin. Our bodies use insulin to move glucose into cells. Surges in blood sugar destroy the thyroid.
  • Aspartame – This artificial sweetener is highly inflammatory. When aspartame is processed by the liver, formaldehyde is released. This toxic chemical impairs thyroid function and can lead to cancer.
  • Cruciferous Vegetables – Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and kale release goitrin. This compound interferes with the synthesis of thyroid hormones.
  • Soy – Soy lowers the concentration of T3.
  • Iodized Salt – The thyroid gland needs iodine to produce hormones. However, to get adequate iodine, you’d have to eat excessive salt. Iodized salt also contains the undesirable additives aluminum and dextrose. A better option is sea salt, which has trace minerals.

Exercise combats the effects of hypothyroidism in several ways. It elevates energy, promotes a healthy weight, and reduces stress. It fosters hormone balance and metabolic efficiency. When you exercise, your body releases feel-good hormones known as endorphins. Three types of exercise deliver these benefits:

  • cardio
  • stretching
  • strength training

Fun forms of exercise that confer these perks are:

  • bicycling
  • bowling
  • dancing
  • gardening
  • swimming
  • yoga
  • walking
  • weight-lifting

The Mayo Clinic gives the following exercise guidelines:

  • 3 hours per week of moderate cardio activity
  • 2 sessions per week of strength training

Cortisol is released in response to stress. As mentioned above, this hormone suppresses the conversion of T4 to T3. Here are some suggestions for minimizing the effects of stress:

  • obtain weekly massages
  • employ time management strategies
  • try to maintain a positive outlook
  • avoid taking on more responsibility than you can manage
  • be at peace with circumstances you can’t control
  • eliminate coffee, sugar, alcohol, and processed foods
  • exercise
  • meditate
  • get adequate sleep

Protect your thyroid from radiation exposure by requesting a thyroid collar before getting x-rays. Also known as a thyroid guard, the shield enfolds your throat. It can be applied prior to dental imaging and mammograms.

Neglecting to address HD is risky. Untreated hypothyroidism impairs mental function. It can lead to fluid accumulation around the lungs and heart. It can also cause an enlarged heart.

Not everyone is a candidate for natural treatment of HD. To maintain optimal endocrine function, thyroid hormone medication may be needed. Even so, the above lifestyle tweaks will minimize symptoms. A qualified endocrinologist will be able to discern the causes of your condition and design the ideal treatment plan.

You can diminish the symptoms of Hashimoto’s Disease. Use the following strategies:

  • fine-tune your diet
  • have fun exercising
  • diffuse the stress balloon
  • wear a thyroid guard during radiology exams

In just a short time, you’ll be looking and feeling great!

Lymphatic System

Just One Simple Exercise to Cleanse the Lymphatic System

Just One Simple Exercise to Cleanse the Lymphatic System

Just One Simple Exercise to Cleanse the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is one of the most vital parts of your body’s immune system. Its complex web organs, lymph nodes, lymph ducts and lymph vessels work to carry lymph from your tissues into the bloodstream. Lymph is an almost-clear fluid composed of white blood cells and liquid from your intestines, and lymph nodes can be found in clusters in places such as the neck, armpit and groin.

So what is it exactly that the lymphatic system does, and why is it so crucial to our body’s proper functioning? According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, lymph nodes produce cells that help the body’s immune system fight infection and also filter the lymph fluid to cleanse the blood of foreign substances such as waste and bacteria. They do this by stuffing your lymph nodes with more white blood cells to fight off whatever harmful material has entered your body. In other words, they increase manpower. This is why when you feel a cold coming on, parts of your neck can feel a little swollen and sore. It’s a sign that your lymph nodes are swelling up with white blood cells to protect your body.

If our lymphatic system is this critical to our well-being, then it must be important to keep it clean and working properly. Luckily, this doesn’t take much! No expensive medicines, strange New Age therapies or demanding detoxification rituals are required. All you need is a pair of lungs, a pair of healthy legs and maybe a friend to keep you company.

According to the Well Being Journal, walking is one of the best and most effective ways to improve physical health. Our bodies, though living in a modern world of modern technologies, are genetically still stuck in the Stone Age. We were designed to walk for several miles a day in search of food, water, etc. Our largely sedentary lifestyle is damaging our health because we were never meant to live that way.

RELATED ARTICLE: 11 Ways to Cleanse Your Lymph System

Power walking helps invigorate the lymphatic system with every step by stimulating the flow of lymphatic fluids. Though our circulatory system relies on the heart to pump blood through our veins and arteries, the lymphatic system relies on gravity. Walking at a steady, brisk pace for 20-30 minutes does for our lymphatic system what our hearts do for our circulatory system. If walking outdoors, the clean, fresh air of nature can have a wealth of other benefits as well. The air around beaches and mountains is, according to Natural Society, brimming with negative ions. Negative ions, as opposed to the positive ions found in the air surrounding cities and suburbs, generate biochemical reactions in the body that increase serotonin levels and give you that much-needed boost of energy.

You already have all the tools you need at hand to create and maintain a healthy, happy and functioning lymphatic system. So do yourself and your body a favor and go on a walk today.

Detox to Retox™ Kidneys & Liver

Detox to Retox™ Kidneys & Liver

I have some bad news – your juice cleanses may not actually be detoxing your body. Why? There are two types of toxins, those tangible and those intangible.

Detox to Retox™ Kidneys & Liver 1

Tangible toxins are the ones we can see and touch, most often found in certain foods and environmental pollutants. Intangible toxins, on the other hand, are engendered by emotion. They are said to each be processed by a particular organ, just as your body would process a tangible toxin.

Fear, for instance, is processed by the kidneys, and stress by the liver, just as it processes alcohol, cheese, and other delights. It is important to use a combination of techniques to cleanse your system and make sure that it is running in optimal form, which at I.AM.YOU. means yoga, nourishment, and mindset.

At I.AM.YOU. I create 360-degree solutions so you can be clean and strong from the inside, out and outside, in. We use food as medicine to both cleanse and strengthen your most important organs, and some simple yoga poses as a tonic to get things on their way. Let’s take a look and get on our Detox to Retox™ way!

The kidneys work closely with the endocrine system to filter, reabsorb, and secrete. They regulate the reabsorption of glucose and amino acids, thus playing a roll in recovery, growth, and development. By producing urine, they secrete the body’s waste and balance body fluid metabolism.

Here is a Detox to Retox™ Kidney Recipe to make them strong and clean, so you can be too:

Detox to Retox™ Kidney Quinoa Salad:

-Chop a white onion, a large carrot, a stalk of celery, a handful of parsley, and a cup of chives.
-Mix into two cups of cooked quinoa, either red or white.
-Add a can of Kidney Beans.
-Toss with the Kidney Detox Dressing below.
-Serve as a side or main, perhaps even with a filet of salmon.

Finely dice a clove of garlic. Whisk together with a tablespoon of Dijon Mustard, Olive Oil, and Red Wine Vinegar.

Detox to Retox™ Kidney Yoga:

Try these two poses together in your general yoga practice or simply as a one-off wherever you are, whenever you may need a pick me up.

Kidney Draining Backbend:

Start laying on the ground, face down. Take your arms out to the side, making a 90-degree angle between your body and your arms, and again in the bend of your elbows. On an inhale lift everything up, floating your torso, legs, and arms in this almost full rectangle shape up into the air. Hold here 3-10 breaths through the nose. Repeat as you need and like.

Old School Wheel:

This pose is another great one for the kidneys. Place your hands by your ears and feet on the floor hip distance apart, knees bent. On an inhale, lift everything up. Let your neck relax and breathe here 3-10 breaths. If your back hurts stick to the first pose.

The liver is the largest internal organ and gland of the body. It is responsible for digestion, metabolic function, and detoxification, among other things. It is the body’s only producer of bile, essential for digestion.

Detox to Retox™ Kidneys & Liver 2

Here is a Detox to Retox™ Kidney Recipe to make them strong and clean, so you can be, too:

Detox to Retox™ Liver Salad

-Chop a head or romaine lettuce and put aside in a bowl.
-Add in 4 stalks of chopped asparagus, a cup of cooked broccoli, and chopped beets.
-On the side, bring 4 large artichokes to a boil. When they are tender, take them out of the water. Peel of the leaves and save them to eat later, or eat as an appetizer.
-Scoop out the artichoke hearts and add to the salad.
-Toss with the Liver Detox dressing below.
-Serve as a main alongside the artichokes or alone.

Finely dice a clove of garlic. Whisk together with the juice of one squeezed fresh lemon and ample olive oil.

Detox to Retox™ Liver Yoga:

Try these two poses wherever you are and whenever you think your liver needs a boost.

Chair Twist: Start standing, feet touching. On an inhale bend your knees and take your arms up. Exhale, twist to the right, bringing your left elbow outside your right knee, thumbs to sternum and palms touching. Breathe here 5-10 breaths and repeat on the other side.

Sqwat Twist: Start in a Chair pose as noted above. Bend your knees even further until your thigh bones are parallel to the floor and you are hovering on the balls of your feet. If your heals don’t touch the ground do not worry – mine don’t either. On an inhale twist to the right, bringing the left forearm outside the right thigh. Lift the right arm up and look at the thumb. Breath here 5-10 breaths and repeat on the other side.

Signs Your Body Needs A Lung Cleanse and How to do It Naturally

Signs Your Body Needs A Lung Cleanse and How to do It Naturally

Signs Your Body Needs A Lung Cleanse and How to do It Naturally

Your lungs serve multiple purposes for your body. They oxygenate blood and trap potentially harmful particulate matter. They also expel harmful gasses that are by-products of various metabolic processes, thereby detoxifying the body. However, the air around you is dirty, and that filth can accumulate in your lungs, reducing their efficiency and promoting respiratory disorders. Signs of needing a lung cleanse can include coughing, wheezing, frequent respiratory infections and fast or labored breathing. By keeping your lungs clear of accumulations, you can help prevent these issues. Here’s how to clean your lungs naturally.

Signs Your Body Needs A Lung Cleanse and How to do It Naturally

Use More Herbs

A number of common herbs function as expectorants. These are substances that liquefy mucus in the lungs, then cause you to cough it up. Among these are cayenne pepper, thyme, mint, rosemary, garlic, ginger, chamomile and basil. Best of all, using these herbs is simple. Added to meals, they will provide a flavorful kick while helping to clear your lungs. They can also be brewed to make a refreshing and cleansing tea.

Try A Grape Cleanse

Grapes are well-known for their ability to relieve constipation and provide the body with powerful antioxidants. However, few people realize that they are also helpful for cleansing the respiratory system. You can use either grape juice or whole grapes for this purpose, and the cleanse takes five to seven days. The substances found in grapes help to clear mucus and harmful chemicals from the lungs, and has the bonus effects of detoxifying the body. To enhance the benefits, experts recommend taking one tablespoon of olive oil each day in addition to the grape cleanse, which further aids the lungs in eliminating toxins.

Vitamin B6

All B vitamins play critical roles in good health, but vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) performs triple duty. It doesn’t just support proper energy metabolism and nervous system function. It also helps keep the lungs in good condition. This nutrient is a powerful expectorant, which helps your lungs get rid of built-up mucus, dirt, tar and other potentially harmful matter. Vitamin B6 can be used in supplement form, but it is also found abundantly in a number of foods. These include liver, fortified rice, poultry, fish, potatoes, sweet potatoes, nuts and seeds, spinach and bananas.

Many people underestimate the importance of optimal lung function, which cannot occur when they’re burdened by pollutants from the air. By knowing how to clean your lungs, you can enjoy fewer respiratory illnesses, less coughing and better overall health.
