What is Maca (Lepedium Meyenii)?

Lepedium meyenii Walp. (Maca root) was first describd by Gerhard Walpers in 1843. Extensive taxonomic treatments of the species Lepedium found in Australia, and North America, but nothing exhaustive has been produced on the varieties native to Peru. It has also been suggested by Chacon de Popovici (1990) that the current day Lepedium grown in Peru is a newer species than that described by Walpers.

Common names of Lepedium meyenii are: maca, Peruvian ginseng, pepper grass, pepper weed, mace. In Spanish they include, maca and maka. In Quechua and other languages they include: maca, maca-maca, maino, maka, ayak chichira, ayak willku.

Have you heard about excipients in your nutritional supplements? If this is the first time you have come across the term, you need to know that “excipients” are used as fillers, glues, and binders. You can imagine them as a type of substance that is extremely toxic to your system.

Most people don’t really understand the consequences of excipients in “nutritional” products. They simply walk inside a store and buy a bottle of vitamins. Frankly, the bottles and boxes you get at big stores do not have any nutritional value so you’re only buying trash.  Even some so called “good” nutrition companies use excipients and justify their stance because it is financially much more profitable.

Excipients are non-nutritive substances, that is to say, they have no nutritional value or justified use in “nutritional” products. If you test these substances, you will see that they are often toxic. If excipients are potentially toxic and have no value, why are they included in nutritional products?

In my opinion, the bottom line is money!  By using excipients, nutritional manufacturers are going to increase their profit on every supplement that they sell using excipients.  For example, tablets cannot be made without excipients because you need to include some kind of “glue” to keep the contents together. In my opinion, if you really want to stay healthy, avoid any nutritional products available in tablet form.

WHY YOUR NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS COULD BE SLOWLY KILLING YOU

Here is a list of “problematic” substances is below, though there are many others not listed here. You will find these in most common nutritional products.

Magnesium stearate

is used as a lubricating agent, but studies reveal that its regular use compromises your immune system.  

Methyl paraben

, one of the most famous members of the benzoate family, is widely known for its cancer-causing abilities.

Microcrystalline cellulose

is commonly used as cheap filler and has harmful effects on your body.

Silicon dioxide

, or common sand, is also used to enhance the flowing properties of nutritional substances in preparations, but you surely don’t want to eat and every day.

Methacrylic copolymer

showed teratogenic effects when tested on rat embryo cultures, meaning it has the potential to disturb the normal growth and development of a fetus.

Substances listed as “natural flavors” can actually be monosodium glutamate (MSG), known to produce neurotoxicity and harm your brain.

You may be tempted to take colorful nutritional products, but beware that the titanium dioxide used as a colorant is well known for its toxic effects on the liver.

Corn starch

, one of the most common examples of cheap excipients, can produce allergic responses in certain individuals.  Unfortunately, you might be one of them.

Talcum powder

, or talc, is rarely listed on the excipients list, but it can contribute to the cause of cancer.

Other dubious substances commonly used to form tablets include D&C red #33, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, polyethylene glycol, propylparaben, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, sodium acetate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, sodium metabisulfite, and Eudragit. All of these are hazardous and can put your life at risk.

You really need to avoid all poor nutritional supplements, especially those that are available in your local grocer, pharmacy, or big box store. Most of these brands contain dangerous solvents that bind the actual vitamin, such as vitamin D that has been solvent-extracted from sheep’s wool or B-vitamins derived from coal tar.

Do these chemicals still sound complicated? Just stop eating excipients and your job is done!

Should healthy adults be taking a daily multivitamin at all? If you believe the latest research, the answer is no.

The first thing to acknowledge is that, for the most part, Americans are not deficient in vitamins. A recent CDC survey found that we’re sufficiently nourished in essential nutrients like vitamins A, D, and folate. Even though we aren’t deficient, that doesn’t necessarily mean that our vitamin levels are optimal. The question is, how important are optimal levels?

“… Get your nutrients through your food. Through the millennia, that’s what the case was and we survived as a species — in fact, we thrived,” says Alice Lichtenstein, DSc, senior scientist and director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at the Jean Mayer U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and the author of a position paper on the usefulness of multivitamins. “To assume that we suddenly have lost this ability doesn’t quite make sense.”

While whole foods are a good source of nutrients, many public health researchers actually credit processed, packaged foods that have been fortified with vitamins for the nutrient-rich American diet. “Most people, if they are eating a generally healthy diet; not a perfect diet, but a generally healthy diet, don’t need a multivitamin,” says Katherine Zeratsky, a registered dietician at the Mayo Clinic. “With things like breakfast cereals, nutrition bars, fortified grains, and bread, because all those foods are fortified with other minerals, we are getting more than we realize and more than we need.”

That doesn’t just make a multivitamin simply redundant, it could make it dangerous: a large surplus of supplemental folate may have an adverse effect on colon cancer and other research has also found a relationship between folic acid supplements and prostate and breast cancers. Liechtenstein adds that an overabundance of vitamin A, to levels of toxicity, can manifest in accelerated bone loss.

All You Need to Know About Multivitamins

Some vitamins are water-soluble and others are fat-soluble. While water-soluble vitamins will pass right through the body and are expelled in urine (the inspiration for the popular “expensive urine” quip among physicians), fat-soluble vitamins are stored and build up over time, making it a easier to reach toxicity. Fat-soluble vitamins include D, E, and A; common inclusions in both fortified foods and in multivitamins.

What’s more, a longitudinal study of those who took multivitamins and those who did not found that taking a regular multivitamin was actually associated with a shorter overall life expectancy. Critics of the study suggested that a bias may exist, namely, that people who take a multivitamin may be doing so in response to overall health problems that reduce their life spans.
Although, the profile of the average multivitamin user is this: a middle-aged woman who eats healthfully and exercises and has an above-average education level. “The population who takes them is most often the population who is least likely to need them,” she says.

There are people however, who can benefit from a multivitamin or certain supplements. One example is those of childbearing age, especially when trying to become pregnant, who should ensure that they get enough folate to prevent birth defects like spina-bifida. Additionally, people who are going through or have gone through menopause might need a boost in certain nutrients, and those on specialized diets that are lacking in nutrition might also benefit. As it’s so highly individualized, a supplement regime should be planned with a doctor.

Still, there remains no evidence that multivitamins are useful to overall or long-term health, and some, albeit inconclusive, evidence that they are harmful.

If you are going to take a multivitamin, it won’t necessarily hurt you. To ensure purity, we recommend looking for a brand that has been certified by a third party testing agency, like U.S. Pharmacopeial. Since vitamins and supplements are not regulated at the same level as food, it’s important to know the source of what you’re taking.

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble nutrient that is vital to all creatures. Foods that are especially rich in vitamin C are citrus fruits (such as oranges and grapefruit) and their juices, as well as red and green pepper, kiwi, broccoli, strawberries, baked potatoes, tomatoes, parsley, strawberries, papaya, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens and Brussels sprouts. Antioxidant
Vitamin C is a powerful and effective antioxidant that protects our bodies from free radicals that cause oxidative stress. Excessive oxidative stress, or “cellular rust,” can lead to a host of severe medical conditions, such as atherosclerosis that can cause both heart disease and stroke, and is associated with many different types of cancer, including lung, mouth, throat, colon, stomach and esophagus. Vitamin C also helps to regenerate the body’s supply of vitamin E (another useful antioxidant).

Immunity
Not only is vitamin C a well-known component of the immune system, it is also necessary for collagen, the main structural protein found in connective tissue. A healthy dose of vitamin C will protect the body from infection and maintain healthy bones and teeth, as well as quicken the natural ability to repair wounds.

Vitamin C has been shown to lower blood pressure, and therefore lessen the probability of hypertension, as well as the serious health problems that follow, such as cardiovascular disease.

Adults, moreover, may suffer from kidney damage and high blood pressure.

Along with its immune functions that fight against bacteria, viruses, and infection, vitamin C also serves as an effective antihistamine that will lessen the unpleasant effects of the common cold, including inflammation, stuffy nose and aches.

Cataracts
The lens of the human eye requires vitamin C to function properly, and a deficiency can lead to cataracts (a condition in which the lens becomes increasingly opaque, causing blurry vision). A higher intake of vitamin C has been shown to fight cataracts by increasing the amount of blood flow to the eye.

Its good to remember that not all vitamin C supplements are the same. Most studies use 500 daily milligrams of vitamin C to achieve health results. That’s much higher than the RDA of 75-90 milligrams a day for adults. Unless a diet of plenty of fruits and vegetables is possible, there may be a need to take a dietary supplement of vitamin C to gain all benefits. The current suggestion is taking 500 milligrams a day, in addition to eating five servings of fruits and vegetables.

All About Krill Oil: The Ultimate Source of Omega-3

Many of us know that omega-3 fatty acids are important to our health. It’s commonly believed that fish oil is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids, however various studies have proved that krill oil is more effective. The acid accumulates in the red blood cells and are important for overall health.

Consumption of krill oil is more effective than fish oil in reducing the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 acids.

A study conducted by Dr. Peter Jones of Richardson Center for Functional Foods and Nutra-ceuticals found krill oil more beneficial than fish oil in many aspects. The study found that daily supplementation with 600 mg of omega-3 polyunsaturated fats for four weeks using krill oil is more effective in raising the omega-3 level index as compared to fish oil. The researchers believe that the benefits of krill oil over fish oil are due to the structural differences between the two marine oils.

Krill oil and fish oil both provide omega-3 PUFA in different forms. Fish oil provides it in triglyceride form while krill oil provides omega-3 in phospholipid form. The effectiveness of both forms still remains a debatable issue.

Krill oil has many critical health benefits. It contains astaxanthin which is a potent antioxidant. Antioxidants are important for boosting immunity and fighting disease. Krill oil also protects the body cells from damage from free radicals. Krill oil can reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels and increases levels of high density cholesterol which is considered good for our health.

Krill oil is known for boosting heart health. Consuming krill oil improves blood circulation which enhances the health of our heart. A study was conducted of over 113 volunteers that lasted 7 weeks. It found that krill oil is more beneficial than fish oil in improving the omega-3 levels in plasma and red blood cells.

People with arthritis may benefit from krill oil. One study found that those who took 300 mg of krill oil products daily had less pain than those who did not take it or had fish oil. Krill oil also provided relaxation of stiffness and improved joint function.
Krill oil has benefits in the treatment of PMS, or premenstrual syndrome. A Canadian study found that women can manage emotional symptoms of PMS using krill oil. It was also found effective in reducing pain during periods. Some participants took krill oil for 3 menstrual cycles while others took fish oil. Participants who took krill demanded fewer painkillers than participants who took fish oil.

Krill oil is also associated with improved brain function. As discussed above krill oil increases the omega-3 fatty acid index, deficiency of which leads to memory loss and cognitive decline of thinking skills. Studies conducted on animals confirmed this benefit of krill oil. It was also found that krill oil produces effects similar to antidepressants.
Krill oil is beneficial for our skin and helps lessen the risk of skin cancer. Its extended skin benefits include improved skin texture, reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, relaxation of itchy plaques of psoriasis, and stronger nails. Krill oil can make hair look shinier and thicker in appearance.

While it is true that krill oil is associated with all the above mentioned benefits, please note that there’re some phony krill oils in the market. What I personally found is that Viva Lab’s Krill oil contains the highest amount of Omega-3 and is also the best-seller on Amazon. You can buy it on Amazon here.

It protects polyunsaturated fats and other oxygen-sensitive compounds such as vitamin A from being destroyed by damaging oxidation reactions.

Overall for skin care, more benefit is obtained from topical application of vitamin E through creams or lotions rather than taking vitamin E orally. The skin is able to absorb natural vitamin E effectively, but taking vitamin E orally is important for health in other areas of the body.

The recommended skin lotions and creams by many experts are those that contain the alcohol form of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) instead of the acetate form (alpha-tocopherol acetate). Benefits of vitamin E also include helping the body increase and regulate the levels of vitamin A in the body and as a general immune system booster, especially in older adults. Topical vitamin E might also promote good blood circulation and prevent the formation of blood clots, especially in people with diabetes.

The problem is that although it is agreed that vitamin E is a very useful and essential vitamin for humans (especially for its antioxidant activity), many of the stated benefits of vitamin E are anecdotal. There are few in-depth studies available to verify some of the vitamin E benefits claims that are being made, however, there are numerous informal reports of individuals insisting significant health benefits with increased levels of vitamin E. Further scientific study will help to target specifically whether vitamin E truly does play a role in treating or preventing the conditions mentioned above.
