4 Natural remedies for hyperthyroidism

4 Natural remedies for hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism means an overactive thyroid, or that the thyroid gland begins secreting large amounts of thyroid hormones, a condition in which your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism can accelerate your body’s metabolism significantly causing sudden weight loss, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, sweating, and nervousness or irritability.
The most common causes for hyperthyroidism are a chronically inflamed thyroid (thyroiditis) and an autoimmune condition called Graves Disease. Both inflammatory and auto-immune disorders are caused by an over-active and under-coordinated immune system.

Cinnamon and Health

Cinnamon and Health

One just has to mention cinnamon and I can almost taste my grandmothers cinnamon apple pie. She makes the filling with fresh apples and, of course, a liberal sprinkling of cinnamon. Who would have ever thought that this spice added more than just flavor? Cinnamon and health could come together.

cinnamon and health

Cinnamon and Blood Sugar Phenomena

Cinnamon is amazing because it is a natural way to lower your blood sugar. It is like a dose of good health. In a new study carried out jointly by NWFP Agricultural University in Pakistan and the US Human Nutrition Research Centre, researchers showed that brown powder from the inner bark of a type of evergreen grown in Asia can help reduce blood glucose levels, triglycerides and even cholesterol!

So why is it important to find way to naturally reduce your blood sugar? Well, type two diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in North America. If you aren’t sure what type 2 diabetes is, the Canadian Diabetes Association defines it as:

A disease in which your pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or your body does not properly use the insulin it makes. As a result, glucose (sugar) builds up in your blood instead of being used for energy. Your body gets glucose from foods like bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, milk and fruit. To use this glucose, your body needs insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body to control the level of glucose in your blood.

Basically, when this process is impaired, extra glucose in the blood can increase the risk of heart disease, as well as kidney, eye and circulatory problems.

Scientific Proven Benefits of Cinnamon

One scientist by the name of Dr. Richard Anderson from the Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville wanted to see first hand the effects of cinnamon on blood-sugar. He took 60 people with type 2 diabetes, average age 52 and divided them into groups that would consume 1 gram, 3 grams, and 6 grams of powdered cinnamon in capsules after their daily meals. A control group was given capsules with wheat flour, an inert substance. The experiment lasted 40 days.

After forty days, blood sugar levels were significantly lower in the cinnamon group as much as 30 percent!! Interestingly, the people who consumed only 1 gram of cinnamon daily did as well as those on higher doses. The research also noted that blood glucose levels stayed low up to 20 days after the cinnamon ingestion! Best of all, there seems to be no downside to eating a gram of cinnamon a day. It has virtually no calories and it tastes great!

Additional Foods and Beverages that Lower Blood Sugar

So what other foods and beverages have been examined for possible blood-sugar lowering effects? Well, green tea has been found to have such effect, as with coffee. However, the catch with coffee is you have to drink at lease six cups a day, which is certainly not advisable. Researchers however have been focusing on the active ingredient in coffee which lowers blood-sugar though called chlorogenic acid…so don’t be too surprised if you see this in a pill form soon.

Red wine has an active ingredient that also lowers blood glucose levels. It is called resveratrol. However, to get the effect you would have to drink three glasses a day! …a tad too much! Other plant-derived materials have also claimed to reduce blood glucose levels, but eh supporting evidence has been sketching. These include fenugreek, bitter melon, Korean ginseng, onions, flaxseed.

So next time you go to grab some sweets or pastries loaded with sugar, maybe consider sprinkling some cinnamon on top.

Stop Thinning Hair Naturally

Stop Thinning Hair Naturally

Stop Thinning Hair Naturally. Are you one of the many women (or men) that suffer from thinning hair? There are many causes for this such as: genetics, age, hormonal changes, breakage, and over use of hair product.
Here are some natural recommendations to stop, or at least slow thinning hair, don’t wait any longer to do something about it!

Stop Thinning Hair Naturally

1. Keep your scalp’s roots clean, the hair follicle will die and thin and eventually fall out, but don’t over shampoo, especially if your hair tends to be dry, it may cause breakage and thinning.

2. Treat your scalp with love, dedicate time to it, get a treatment or mask to open follicles and help the regrowth of new hair, avoid chemical treatments (especially dying and perms) since they can make the hair shaft weaker leading it to break and thin.

3. Make sure you are choosing the correct product, many products can clog your pores and cause follicle irritation, and remember not to over brush it, since it will definitely thin and damage your hair.

4. Cut it right, a good haircut can add instant life and a lush illusion to hair. Long layers give fullness, thickness and body to a hairstyle.

5. Take vitamins, they will nourish the hair within and its concentrated formula encourages healthy hair growth.

6. Finally remember that a poor diet can lead to hair thinning and even baldness. Eat a balanced diet, eat as many vegetables and fruits as you can, include protein and seeds. Have a balanced lifestyle, avoid stress, focus on relaxation, you deserve it.

8 Ways to Relieve Stress Naturally

8 Ways to Relieve Stress Naturally

A certain amount of stress provides stimulation, while prolonged stress can cause mental and physical damage. The following are examples of factors that affect the body, causing it to make a series of rapid physiological changes called “adaptive responses” to deal with threatening or demanding situations.

Stress can include environmental stresses, such as pollution, noise, housing problems, cold/over-heating, and physical stresses such as illnesses, injuries, inadequate diet, and mental stressors such as relationship problems, financial strain, bereavement and job difficulties, just for starters.

Stress, conflict and worry are poison, not only for your mental well-being, but for your body’s defenses. In order to ease the burden on body and soul:

relieve stress naturally

1- Build in regular breaks during the day for a little “me” time

2- Learn a relaxation technique, such as meditation, yoga, progressive music relaxation, or tai chi

3- Get adequate rest, trying your best to always go to bed at the same time and also get up at the same time every day

4- Pumpkin seeds contain high quantities of zinc, iron and calcium, as well as B vitamins and proteins, which are necessary for brain function, this will help you to deal with stress , oats are also vital for a healthy nervous system. In periods of stress, start the day with oatmeal, which will help to keep you calm, and prevent depression and general debility.

5- Essential oils, such as basil, chamomile, geranium, lavender, neroli and rose are excellent for stress reduction because many of them work on the nervous system and brain to relax and soothe, others uplift, which can be invaluable in times of serious stress.

6- Of course, eating a good, balanced diet will make your body stronger and able to cope more efficiently with stress.

7- B vitamins are often depleted by stress, so ensure that you are getting enough in your diet, or take a good supplement. There is some evidence that bee and flower pollen boosts immunity and energize the body. Vitamin C is a great stress reliever as well, it boosts immunity making you fitter and healthier.

8- There is an amino acid, L-tyrosine, that appears to energize and relieve stress, which improves reactions to stressful situations; staying more alert, less anxious, more efficient, and having fewer complaints of physical discomforts.

Natural Remedies for Hair Loss

Natural Remedies for Hair Loss

Its normal to shed 50-100 hairs from your head each day, but sometimes this number can increase due to stress on the body, hormones, and even genetics. Other causes of hair loss include several illnesses with high fever, pregnancy and childbirth, shock, skin cancer, chemotherapy, excess of vitamin A, autoimmune disease, and a few others. If you have a healthy head of hair, your scalp replaces hairs at the same rate you lose them. If you are losing more than 200 hairs a day, you may have a problem, the new hair growth just can’t keep up.

natural-remedies-for-hairlossWEB

Nature offers an array of effective remedies and applications that are much easier on the pocketbook.

Rub your head for 10 minutes with the surface of a freshly cut onion, the odorous vegetable contains plenty of sulfur, which aids in the formation of collagen, a substance that makes hair fuller and stronger. Follow up by washing your hair.

Massage a few drops of pure tea tree oil into your scalp to stimulate hair growth
Use rosemary oil to activate your hair follicles to promote growth
Contrast hot and cold water while shampooing. End with cold water and towel the scalp dry.
Sage tea, drunk and applied externally, will stimulate hair growth; meanwhile Nettle tea helps to cleanse the system, and encourages the growth of hair.

natural hair treatments
Increase your intake of vitamin B-complex, choline, inositol, calcium, magnesium, vitamins and minerals in a good supplement.
Don’t wash your hair too often, once or twice a week is enough for healthy hair and skin. Most people shampoo much too often, unless you are sweating excessively, even then a dry shampoo may be sufficient.

Gout: Natural Treatments

Gout is an acute disease of the joints, when your kidneys become less effective at flushing away excess uric acid, the acid begins to crystalize in your joints, tendons, and muscles, leading to swelling, pain and tenderness, caused mostly by a hereditary factor and bad diet.

gout natural treatmentsIn fact, there was a time when this painful form of arthritis was kind of a status symbol, since a diet of red meat washed down with port can bring on the disease, so anybody who could afford to eat expensively could complain, with a certain amount of satisfaction.

natural treatments for gout

It is caused by the deposition of chalky crystals around the joints, tendons, and other body tissues when there is an abnormally high level of uric acid in the body as I mentioned earlier.

The first sign of gout in usually excruciating pain and inflammation of the innermost joint of the big toe (could be ankle, knee joint, hand, wrist or elbow).

Here’s how you can give the nasty old ailment the boot:

Get flushed! Drink plenty of water and herbal tea to help your kidneys flush out uric acid.

Birch leaf tea and horsetail tea act as a diuretic, helping to flush out uric acid too, it also contains salicylate, the same pain-relieving compound found in aspirin.

A good diet is key, eat plenty of greens and vitamin C, if you get attacks of gout, avoid alcohol and rich organ meats such as liver and kidneys.

Rub the painful joints with camphor spirits (a solution of camphor and rubbing alcohol).

Raw apple and cucumber juice will help to reduce the severity and incidence of attacks.

One of the most recommended treatments is 2 teaspoons of Black Cherry concentrate Juice with one tea spoon of natural Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with glass full of water first thing in the morning every day until healed.

Bad Breath Remedies to Get Rid of The Smell

[Last Updated on April 28th 2014]

Bad breath is one of the most common health problems and most of us are looking for bad breath remedies. An improper diet can lead to stomach problems and a deficiency in good intestinal flora, bacteria in the mouth, stomach and intestine problems, sluggish bowels, and sinus or throat infections.

Bad Breath Remedies to Get Rid of The Smell

Certain foods, tobacco, and alcohol are the most common causes of bad breath. There are many ways and remedies you can use to freshen your breath, starting with eliminating what causes the bad breath, such as white sugar and bleached white flour, and introducing a diet based on seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and fruits. Avocado helps eliminate intestinal putrefaction, which can lead to bad breath, so it’s a great add to your shopping list.

It is important to know that there are some liquid offenders that leave a residue that can attach to the plaque in your mouth and infiltrate your digestive system, these include coffee, beer, wine and whiskey, which are recommended to avoid, but it can also happen with natural food such as onions, spices and garlic but since they provide many benefits to the body it is advisable to brush teeth immediately after ingestion. This is not true of coffee and wine, brushing after ingestion can cause the staining material, called tannin, to be pushed deeper into the enamel.

 bad breath causes

The best solution for bad breath is to practice good oral hygiene and keep the mouth, tongue, teeth, and gums clean and healthy. Brush and floss your teeth regularly and clean your gums to remove bacterial buildup.

Try natural remedies to fresher your breath such as: chewing some leaves of parsley after eating, which is rich in chlorophyll, a green plant compound that kills bacteria that cause odor, also chewing unripe guava or guava leaves is an excellent tonic for the teeth and gums.

You can also use natural oils with your toothpaste such as tea tree or peppermint while brushing, cardamom seeds and fenugreek seeds can also help sweeten your breath.

This might be caused physiological by a block of the adrenal glands, caused mainly by excessive stress, nutritional deficiencies, stimulants and toxic metals and chemicals often play a large role in adrenal burnout, among many other reasons.

Adrenal glands play a significant role in the body, secreting more than 50 essential hormones necessary for life, which are responsible for many of the functions we need to stay alive and healthy, such as: Energy production – carbohydrate, protein and fat conversion to blood glucose for energy, fluid and electrolyte balance and fat storage.

Dry Cracked Feet, and How to Fix Them

Dry Cracked Feet, and How to Fix Them

Dry Cracked Feet, and How to Fix Them

Como Solucionar Los Pies Secos y Agrietados

Sandal season is starting, and so many of us have such dry cracked feet that we are often embarrassed by putting our feet on display. You might even have considered visiting a podiatrist. In any major store, you will find dozens of products promising to heal your heels, but how do you know which ones work? Why do your feet do this?

dry cracked feet home remedies

Your feet do not produce natural oils, they rely on sweat glands to moisturize them and keep them soft. There are several things that can keep your body from doing this itself. These include diabetes, thyroid trouble, any chronic illness that affects your skin, edema, and aging. It can also be caused by bacteria, vitamin deficiencies, overexposure to water, shoes that don’t fit properly, and lack of air circulation around the feet.

dry feet

There are some easy at home remedies for dry cracked feet to try, and some good common sense rules of thumb to use. If your moisturizer or foot lotion lists its first ingredient as water, it’s not going to solve the problem. Water dries you back out. There are things probably in your fridge and kitchen cupboards right now that can put your feet on the path to smoothness.

dry feet2

  • 1 cup of white vinegar to 2 gallons warm water, soak for 30-45 minutes once a week, rinse, dry, apply moisturizer and socks
  • 1/2 cup baking soda to 1 gallon warm water, stir until dissolved, soak 30-45 minutes, rinse, dry, apply moisturizer and socks
  • 1-2 gallons warm water, few drops tea tree oil, soak, rinse, dry, moisturize, apply socks – this works great if it’s from bacteria or fungus
  • 1-2 gallons warm water, 2-3 Tablespoons lemon juice, soak, rinse, dry, etc.

Instead of lotion try some olive oil, coconut oil, or any kitchen oil, you can add a drop or 2 of an essential oil to make it smell good if you like, make sure it is an essential oil and not a fragrance oil, most fragrance oils have an additive that makes them unsafe for skin application. One great mixture is one tablespoon of olive oil and a few drops of lemon juice, mix it up and rub it on. Always use clean cotton socks afterward; cotton will allow air to circulate while your feet soak up the moisture of the oil.

Enjoy your soft and smooth feet, and your comfortable summer shoes!

7 Healing Herbal Teas

7 Healing Herbal Teas

7 Healing Herbal Teas

For centuries, people have relied upon natural remedies, such as healing herbal teas. Many people still turn to such remedies for minor issues. They can be safe, effective and require no prescription.

Many modern medicines actually originated from natural sources, but were turned into a synthetic product. However, the natural source is often superior to the synthetic version. Quinine comes from the bark of a tree and can be used to treat malaria. It inspired the development of several synthetic drugs. Some strains of malaria are becoming resistant to the synthetic drugs, yet they remain treatable by natural quinine.

One reason may be that the natural source is more complex. Synthetic drugs typically consist of a single active ingredient that has been identified as the important part of the equation. But, this is a less elegant approach than the more complex compound developed by mother nature over countless ages.

When you drink healing herbal teas, you get the full complexity of what mother nature designed. This complexity can allow you to get the desired effect more gently than what you typically experience with over the counter drugs intended to treat the same problem. Natural remedies are better because they subtler.

Get Rid of Canker Sores Naturally

Get Rid of Canker Sores Naturally

Canker sores, also known as mouth ulcers or aphthous ulcers, are disruptions of oral mucosa and can be extremely painful; it can be caused by sensitivity to gluten.
There are many natural remedies you can try yourself to release these symptoms such as:

• Mix together equal amounts of Milk of Magnesia or Kaopectate and Benylin or Benadryl. Milk of Magnesia and Kaopectate both contain ingredients that coat wet tissues, such as those in the mouth. Benylin and Benadryl contain ingredients that act as mild topical anesthetics and antihistamines (which reduce inflammation). Make sure you don’t swallow it, apply with a cotton swab.

• Take a B-100 B complex vitamin supplement daily.

• Be careful with your diet, some sort of allergic reaction to foods may be to blame (tomatoes for example) You should also stay away from hot foods, in terms of temperature or spiciness.

• Try applying tincture of propolis, available at health food stores. Propolis, the cement made by honeybees to construct their hives, has remarkable antiseptic and healing properties.

• Try Cayenne, which contains capsaicin, a constituent that temporarily desensitizes the nerves that cause pain. That’s why cayenne pepper is in some candy recipes designed to relieve canker sore pain. Probiotics products may also be helpful.

• A little aloe juice from the juicy inner portion of the leaf has potential curative powers, run it over the canker several times daily, it could be just what you need.

• Take slippery elm powder mixed to a paste with water; alternatively, suck on slippery elm lozenges, available in both drug and health food stores.

• Apply ice.

• Switch to a toothpaste that does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a foaming agent that may contribute to recurrences. Try natural toothpaste instead.
