Many of you have probably heard about breast density and it’s importance during a mammogram which is an important diagnostic tool for breast cancer. First we need to know what breast density is.

What is Breast Density?

Breast density refers to the composition of your breast tissue. Breasts are a combination of fibrous, glandular, and fatty tissue. The test compares glandular and fibrous tissues to areas with fat, simply speaking your breasts are considered dense if you have more glandular and fibrous tissue than fatty tissue, this can change slightly over time.

Do you have dense breast tissue?

You can find out through a radiologist who looks at your mammogram. This has nothing to do with breast size or firmness. Some believe that if their breasts are firm it means they have dense breasts, but it is not the same thing. Radiologists can see breast density by looking at the mammogram, the density is divided into 4 categories from least dense to most dense. The first category is breasts with the most fatty issue, which is the least dense, the fourth category is the most dense with very little fatty tissue.

Why it matters:

It’s more difficult for doctors to spot cancer in dense breasts on a mammogram because dense tissue appears white on a mammogram, as do lumps which may be cancerous. For those with dense breasts a mammogram can be less accurate. Moreover, dense breast tissue is linked with increased risk of breast cancer. This is where a baseline mammogram comes in handy, it’s easier to spot changes if you know what to look for.

What’s next?

If you have dense breast tissue talk to your doctor about extra screenings or tests that may be right for you. Since dense breasts are linked to higher breast cancer risk, lowering the density will not reduce risk of cancer, you can consider other measures to lower your risk. You still need to consider other factors like family history and high risk.

Is it Abnormal?

No! It is not at all abnormal. Approximately 40% of women who have mammograms have dense breasts, it’s more common in younger women. Only 10% of women fall in the fourth category of mammogram screening tests and 10% have fatty breast tissue, everyone else falls somewhere in between.

Age and Menopause

Body Weight

Body weight is one of the factors related to breast density. Women with less dense breasts are more likely to have higher body weight in adulthood and adolescence and increased weight gain that starts from the age 18 as compared to women with dense breasts.

Before menopause extra weight protects women against breast cancer while after menopause it increases the risk. Staying at, or attaining, a healthy body weight is better for you and your health.

• Breast Structure
Factors that affect breast structure include cysts, breast trauma, prior breast surgery, and others are the causes of noncyclic breast pain. The pain usually occurs in the chest wall and muscles leading to the breast. Those with larger breasts may also suffer pain in their neck, back, and shoulders.

• The wrong bra
You should always choose the right bra to support your breasts. Pamper your breasts, they are sensitive. If the bra is too tight or the cup size is too small it can lead to breast pain which usually goes away after you switch to a properly fitted bra. Know the correct size then shop for lingerie.

• Medications
Birth control pills and hormone replacement pills like infertility medications or menopausal aids are likely to cause breast pain. They contain estrogen and progesterone which disrupts the functioning of hormones leading to breast pain. Antidepressants can also cause breast soreness and pain.

• Fatty acid imbalance
Imbalances of fatty acids within cells is likely to affect breast tissue and circulation of hormones. You can use primrose oil, a good source of fatty acids, it helps reduce breast tissue sensitivity to hormones by compensating the loss of fatty acids.

• Workout
If you have been doing push-ups or lifting weights it can cause tender breasts. This pain comes from lack of support to the muscles underneath your breasts during strenuous exercise. A recent study stated that one in every three marathon runners report breast pain. Get a good support bra for yourself and be careful with heavy lifting.

What you can do:

• Take magnesium supplements in the latter half of your menstrual cycle, which is usually 2 weeks before your period. This will help relieve cyclic breast pain and other PMS symptoms. You should also eat magnesium-rich foods.

• Reduce your intake of dietary fat to 15% or less to reduce breast tenderness. This is backed by a study which shows that long-term changes in your diet will eventually lead to a reduction of breast pain.

• Reduce caffeine consumption, some women report they felt less pain after cutting down on caffeine.

• If it gets more severe and does not go away after 3 weeks call your doctor.

Breast pain or soreness, technically called mastalgia, is not uncommon in women, especially in women under the age of 50. In most cases, mastalgia is not serious. For instance, sore  breasts rarely indicate cancer. You should see your doctor, though, if you experience severe breast pain, if breast pain lasts for more than three weeks, or if you notice any new lumps in your breasts or changes in your nipples.

You should know that breast pain is rarely a sign of cancer and that in most cases, breast cancer is actually painless. That’s why it’s so important to do regular breast self exams, get breast exams done by a doctor, and have mammograms done regularly when you are over the age of 40.

The top 5 reasons women’s breasts hurt include:

• Hormonal changes related to your menstrual cycle. This is probably the most common reason women have sore breasts. Women often describe this type of breast pain as a feeling of heaviness or tenderness in both breasts. The soreness may radiate to your armpits. The pain is usually worse right before your period and goes away after your period is over. This type of breast pain is more common in younger women. It often disappears during pregnancy and goes away after menopause.

Fibroadenomas. A fibroadenoma is a noncancerous tumor that sometimes develops in breast tisue. A fibroadenoma usually only causes pain in one breast and women often describe it as a sharp pain or burning sensation. A breast biopsy may be needed to make sure a breast lump is a fibroademona and not cancer. Fibroadenomas are most common in women in their late teens and early twenties.

• Cysts. Cysts are fluid-filled sacks that can develop in your breasts. They can cause pain similar to that caused by fibroadenomas. If you have a cyst in your breast, you may be able to feel a lump. Cysts sometimes go away on their own but you should see your doctor if you feel a lump to make sure it’s not something more serious. A breast biopsy may be necessary to make sure it’s just a cyst. Breast cysts usually occur in women under the age of 50.

• Breast size. Women with large breasts may experience pain or soreness in one or both breasts. It may feel like heaviness, tightness, tenderness or a sharp pain. Women experiencing breast pain due to the size of their breasts often have some pain in their necks, shoulders and backs, as well.

• Medications. Certain medications sometimes cause breasts to hurt, including birth control pills, some infertility treatments, hormone replacement therapy and some antidepressants, including Prozac and Zoloft. Talk to your doctor if you think your medication is making your breasts hurt. Don’t stop taking any medications, especially antidepressants, without talking with your doctor first.

Do Push-Ups

One of the things that really affects the way your breasts sit on your chest is the muscles underneath. The more you are willing to work your chest muscles, the perkier your breasts will be. Do a set of ten push-ups three times a day. Make sure that you are going for quality rather than quantity. Do them from your knees if you have to. The more you are willing to do push-ups, the better your breasts will look.


Lie on your back on the floor, your arms outstretched and a five pound dumbbell in each hand. Take a deep breath and on the exhale raise your arms until you are holding the dumbbells straight up in the air. Hold them there for a moment, and then release them slowly back to place. This is something that can make a big difference when you want to firm your breasts up because they tighten the pectoral muscles underneath the breasts. Do two sets of ten presses every day.


When you want to make sure that your breasts are firm, you need to improve your muscle tone, and that is where inchworm exercises come in. Take a deep breath, and on the exhale, bend until you can place your hands on the ground in front of you. Slowly walk your hands out in front of you, holding your body firm, until you are nearly in a plank position. Use your core muscles to hold your form, and feel the stretch through your chest and your back. Then walk your feet up close to your hands, and hold that position for a bit. After that, you can simply repeat the exercise between five and ten times.

When you lose weight, you might be ready to cheer except for your breasts. Whether you are dealing with sagging breasts after weight loss now, or you are worried about dealing with it in the future, take the time to do a few of these exercises on a regular basis.

There is a lot of misinformation out there, from media outlets and internet postings to entire movements about being bra-free. Most of them say that people shouldn’t’ wear bras 24/7, that we’re not meant to. All of these sources, and more, contain rumors about the potential dangers of antiperspirants and underwire bras. There are even some that warn wearing a bra at night could cause breast cancer. These concerns stem mostly from two points:

– Underwire bras block the drainage of lymphatic fluid from the breast so that it cannot re-enter the body

– Antiperspirant ingredients are absorbed through the skin, either toxifying the body and/or disallowing the release of toxins when you sweat thus cause these toxins to build up in the breast tissue.

However, there is a significant lack of evidence to support either of these two claims.

Even the most clogging, clinical antiperspirant doesn’t block ALL perspiration from secreting from the armpit. Most cancer-causing substances are removed from your system by the kidneys and liver or released through the urine. Even if it did stop sweating completely from the armpit, there’s not only other places for it to be released, sweating isn’t a significant way for the body to release toxins. Yes, there are some concerns about the chemicals contained in the antiperspirants like parabens and phthalates which are used for fragrance and preservation. However, these chemicals are unlikely to cause cancer.

Similarly, underwire bras do not cause breast cancer. There has only been one scientific study that has looked into a possible link between underwires and breast cancer and there was no difference between women who wore bras and those who didn’t. That being said, being overweight does increase the risk for breast cancer and those who are overweight tend to have larger breasts. Women who forego bras tend to be smaller chested and carry less body weight, overall.

There are some sources who claim that too tight bras increase chances of breast cancer, as though your breast tissue is coal and breast cancer is the diamond just waiting to happen with enough heat and pressure. The obvious solution to this sort of problem, if it even exists, is to properly measure one’s own band and mammary size, then wear the corresponding size accordingly. For that matter, you should do that, anyway. It’s life-changing. It doesn’t seem like it would be, such a simple thing, but it really makes a difference. This legend was encouraged and widely spread again by the book, “Dressed to Kill: The Link Between Bras and Breast Cancer,” by Soma Grismaijer and Sydney Singer. Somewhat hilariously, the authors claimed to have surveyed 4700 women and that “100% of women with breast cancer wear bras.” Luckily, it’s just not true.

1. Appearance

It is a fact that no two nipples look alike which means that your nipples may not look exactly like each other. The outer circle is called the areola and is colored pink, tan, dark pink, or brown. The pigment of nipples is darker than the surrounding area so that babies can easily identify them. Size is usually genetic.

2. Third Nipple

Per statistics, 1 in 18 people is born with three nipples. It usually will not lactate but is just benign extra tissue. Sometimes it runs in families but doctors believe its is a random occurrence.

3. Erection

The areola can become darker with physical excitement from blood going to the area. In some cultures women paint their nipples darker to increase passion in their partners. An erect nipple does not always signify $e*u@l readiness, cold air can cause it, as can tension and uncomfortable clothing.

4. Size does not matter when it comes to milk

The size of the breast does not matter for purposes of breast feeding. Per Debbi Donovan, certified lactation consultant, larger breasts have more fatty tissue, but this does not affect milk production.

5. Nipple types

There are 4 types of nipples: Average nipples stick out a few millimeters from the areola and come out more when aroused. Flat nipples protrude only from temperature changes or when stimulated. Puffy nipples have a raised areola, and the last type is inverted nipples, which are turned inward.

6. Don’t wash your nipples with soap while breastfeeding

Nipples secrete naturally lubricating, bacteria-fighting oils. Of course, hygiene is important as moist breasts are more prone to bacteria. Simple water and air drying is enough to keep them clean and healthy.

7. Massage

Here is a natural way to heal cracked and sore nipples from breastfeeding, massage your nipples with some extracted breast milk. Let it air dry then wash it off. Breast milk works as a natural healer.

Some facts about nipple piercing:

1. Healing period

The healing duration varies from men to women. Per Elayne Angel, author of “The Piercing Bible,” for men the minimum healing period is 3 months, for women its 6. It can take one year or longer depending on overall health.

2. Location

You should never get the areola of your nipple pierced as the piercing is too deep which can cause infection or mastitis in your areola. Usually nipples are pierced at the bottom, where the areola meets the nipple.

3. Myth about piercing

Some people believe that breastfeeding is not possible once your nipples are pierced, which is not true. Per the Association of Professional Piercers, piercing nipples does not affect the ability of a woman to nurse. The only thing that can be risky is choking on the jewelry. You can remove it while feeding your child to eliminate the risk.

4. Time

Plan to spend at least one hour at the shop when you go in for nipple piercing. Some paperwork and an anatomy consultation session occurs with the piercer before the process of piercing begins. The piercer explains how to take care of your nipple. The piercing can make you feel dizzy or nauseous and you should not leave until you are feeling better. Taking a friend along is a good idea.

5. Inverted nipples can also be pierced

This will change the structure of your nipples making them look like an outward nipple. The size of your nipple will also slightly enhance as the piercing heals. Once healing is complete they will revert to their soft and supple texture.
