The advantage to taking an essential oil-based approach to acne treatment is that many of these can be mixed and matched until they’re tailored to your own unique skincare needs.

Here is a list of the best acne-fighting essential oils and their major benefits:

• Geranium oil (reduces flushing)
• Rosemary Oil (increases circulation, rebuilds collagen, lightens acne marks, antioxidant)
• Lemon tree oil (astringent)
• Tea tree oil (antibacterial)
• Manuka oil (antibacterial)
• Bergamot Oil (antibacterial, astringent)

Please note the following instructions as well:
• You must use a carrier oil (see below) with an essential oil to dilute it.
• Don’t combine 2 or more essential oils in one mixture. Changing essential oils too often or combining them carry an additional risk of allergic reaction, unexpected sensitizing of the skin or even escalation of acne.
• Use essential oils as an addition to your regular acne skincare regimen
• You can use one soothing concoction in the morning (ex. rosemary oil and kukui oil) and one cleansing & astringent concoction at night (ex. bergamot oil and apricot kernel oil).

I personally favor bergamot oil as less harsh and more pleasant to use. It has both antibacterial and antiseptic qualities while also minimalizes the skin oiliness (works great on the t-zone) and therefore works both as an “assistant to treatment” and a beauty adjunct.
Whatever you use, however remember NEVER put an essential oil directly on your skin as they actually may cause severe irritation and allergic reaction. Always dilute them in a carrier oil such as:

• Sweet almond oil
• Apricot kernel oil
• Grapeseed oil
• Avocado oil
• Coconut oil
• Kukui oil
• Macadamia oil



Remember to avoid mineral oil. In choosing a carrier oil, I favor kukui oil (used in Hawaii as a beauty oil for centuries and loaded with anti-inflammatory properties) and apricot kernel oil for its moisturizing properties and light texture. Most of the carrier oils have their own beneficial properties such as Vitamin E, Vitamin A and antioxidants.

You might be surprised to learn just how little of an essential oil should be used when creating a mixture. Most experts recommend that essential oils comprise no more than 2% of your final concoction – which means you should use about 12 drops of essential oil for every ounce (6 tsp.) of carrier oil. However, if your skin is particularly sensitive, you may want to begin with as little as 1%, or 6 drops.

Try testing a patch of skin on your underarm (a sensitive part) first and if there is no reaction, you can apply with a soft washcloth.

Please note, do not drink these (or ANY) essential oils mixtures, thinking you could treat yourself from the inside out. Even some of the carrier oils such as avocado oil, coconut oil, macadamia oil or grapeseed oil are great for cooking or salads, but when mixed with essential oils they may become difficult to digest, cause cramps and diarrhea. The longer term effects are unknown as well, so better to be safe.

How to Choose the Right Essential Oil Brand

It is just as important to choose a quality essential oil – one that is effective and safe. I prefer going with a smaller grower who is as close to the production process as possible – you’re also supporting a small business owner. Here are some characteristics that you’ll want to look for in a company that sells essential oils:

• GC/MS tested
• Organic
• Grown in indigenous locations
• Doesn’t include anything additional like fillers or solvents
• Extraction should be under low pressure/temperature
• High quality and effectiveness should go without saying!
• Stellar education/customer service

Possible Problems with Essential Oils for Acne Treatment

If you’ve been dealing with acne for any length of time, then you’re already familiar with the burdens of sensitive skin. Unfortunately, when used carelessly, essential oils can make these skin sensitivity problems even worse.

As we stated above since essential oils contain highly concentrated plant extracts, they’re simply too powerful to be applied undiluted to the skin – and this is especially true for oils that are highly acidic or astringent, such as lemon tree oil or bergamot oil. When exposed to substances such as this, it’s not uncommon to experience painful rashes, itching, and burning, even blisters.


What is best for you?


While you may find success in helping to heal current breakouts with essential oils, it’s important to remember that they do not address the primary causes of acne. Because of this, it’s best to think of them as a means of “damage control” and not a permanent solution to your acne problems.

In order to truly be rid of your breakouts, you must focus on the unseen, internal origins of acne. For many people, the trouble starts with their hormones. Therefore only products that address this problem are an efficient way to treat acne and prevent the new ones form coming. It’s also important to use something that does not directly affect hormone levels (playing with hormones may be very tricky) and instead prevents androgens from sending its signals to your skin.

Our skin is a key organ as it covers our entire body. It is the largest organ and serves many important functions, it protects our inner body and regulates body temperature, as well as storing water, fat, and vitamin D. There are three layers of skin; the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layer.

All three layers can have the following skin problems:

1. Acne Per Mayo Clinic, acne is the most common skin problem, and 80% of the population has had acne at some point in their life. These are small red pustules that occur when our skin’s oil glands and pores become clogged and inflamed. It is most common in adolescents but can happen throughout adulthood.


2. Hives Hives occur as a result of an allergic reaction. You can see the appearance of welts that are itchy, or sometimes burning and stinging. The welts can be of different sizes and they can join together to form larger ones. They can occur anywhere on your body and can last from a few minutes to several days. The most common causes are foods, infections, and medications.


3. Psoriasis This is a skin disease that causes swelling and scaling, usually thick red skin patches with silvery scales are seen. These skin patches may itch or feel sore. In the US around 2% of the population has psoriasis. It can happen at any age, but is most common in the 30’s. The patches most often occur on the elbows, knees, legs, face, palms, scalp, lower back, and sole of the feet. Treatment of psoriasis depends upon the severity of the disease. The causes are unknown, however it occurs when our immune system causes new skin cells to produce rapidly.


4. Liver or Age Spots Usually people think these spots occur as we age, but they are actually caused by sun exposure. The color of the spots may be brown or grey and occur on the face, hands, arms, and other places where the skin is exposed to the sun. Use a good sunscreen as a prevention tool.

5. Rosacea Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease that happens in adults. Signs include frequent redness or flushing of the face and small bumps or pustules that resemble other skin conditions like acne, they usually occur in cycles. There is no cure for this disease but treatments exist.


6. Skin Tags Skin tags are small flaps of tissue that hang from the skin by a stalk. They can be dark or flesh-colored and are found on the neck, armpits, back, chest, under the breasts, and groin area. Elderly people and women are more prone to this skin condition. They do not cause pain or discomfort and are not dangerous unless they are repeatedly shaved and caused to bleed.

7. Moles Moles are small growths on the skin produced by clustering of melanocytes or pigment. They are common and usually harmless, but can develop into melanoma. Most often moles are small, dark brown spots on the skin, but they can be a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. Interestingly they are often considered ‘beauty marks.’

8. Melanoma This is life-threatening skin cancer, and is the 8th most common malignancy in the United States, per Cleveland Clinic. It occurs in skin cells that produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color and most often occurs to the areas exposed to sunlight. It’s important to care for your skin and monitor spots and color or shape changes and growth.

9. Skin cancer Two more severe forms of skin cancer are basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma. They are most common in the United States and are highly curable if treated at an early stage. As in all skin conditions, preventing your skin from harmful UV rays is the best way to prevent these diseases.

10. Eczema With eczema our skin becomes dry, itchy, red, and inflamed. The causes of eczema are unknown, however, some irritants, allergens, and stress may be responsible for this disease. It’s usually seen on elbows, hands, and the inside of the elbows or back of the knees.

The fact is that more than 1 out of every 2 pregnant women can expect to develop acne. And for some, acne may be severe.  Using any type of medications, including acne treatments, during pregnancy presents a dilemma: the expectant mother needs to make certain the safety of the baby as well as the mother is preserved.   So how do we know what’s safe and what’s not?

Why Acne Develops During Pregnancy

Acne is an external manifestation of an internal imbalance that leads to overproduction of sebum (skin oil) by sebaceous glands. This extra sebum together with dead skin cells creates an ideal condition for bacterial growth, which can promote inflammation. The first stage of acne usually starts as oily skin; the next stage is the appearance of comedones (whiteheads and blackheads). If the pore becomes inflamed due to the influx of white blood cells, pustules and papules appear. If the inflammatory response spreads to adjacent tissue, this represents cystic acne.

The primary cause of the over-secretion of sebaceous glands is actually an imbalance in circulating levels of $e* hormones (androgens, otherwise known as testosterone, estrogen and progesterone). Both women and men produce all three hormones but, of course, in different amounts.

During pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, estrogen and progesterone levels increase therefore increasing the skin’s production of sebum. The risk of getting acne during pregnancy is higher; however, it is rather difficult to predict who will suffer from more severe acne flare-ups, and which women will “glide” through this period without acne problems.  One risk factor is whether you have a history of acne or experienced acne flares at the start of your menstrual cycle. If so, you may have a higher risk of experiencing acne during your pregnancy. If you do not develop acne during the first trimester, it’s unlikely you’ll have this problem at all since it is rare to get acne in the second or third trimesters.

How to Treat Acne When You’re Pregnant 

Unfortunately, many prescription and over-the-counter acne treatments come with a high risk of birth defects so avoiding them is both a necessity and responsibility we have to take very seriously. Below is information that can help keep you and your unborn baby safe.



What to Avoid: Unsafe Acne Treatments During Pregnancy 

  • Isotretinoin. Isotretinoin is known under the brand name Accutane and a number of generic names. It is an oral product used mostly for treating severe acne. However, it’s especially dangerous before and during pregnancy as the drug is known to affect a fetus and cause serious birth defects.
  • Hormone therapy. This includes the “female” hormone estrogen and the anti-androgens flutamide and the potassium sparing diuretic spironolactone.
  • Oral tetracyclines. These include antibiotics such as tetracycline, doxycycline and minocycline, which can inhibit bone growth and discolor new forming permanent teeth.
  • Topical retinoids such as adapalene (Differin), tazarotene (Tazorac) and tretinoin (Retin-A). Topical retinoids are actually similar to isotretinoin since they may reach the blood stream. Although studies show that the amount of these medications absorbed through the skin is low (about 5%), they still may increase the risk of birth defects. Please note that all retinoids or cosmetic products that contain them are required to carry a warning that states it is unknown whether they can harm a developing baby or a child that is being breastfed.
  • Salicylic acid. For the same reasons, many experts also recommend against using topical treatments containing salicylic acid while pregnant. This is an ingredient found in almost all over-the-counter acne products with Proactiv®, NatureCure®, Clearsil® and other known brands. As for those who are not pregnant and/or do not plan on having a baby within the immediate future (up to 6 months), use of these products may have limited efficacy in treating acne but is not harmful (with the exception of possibly drying, irritating or prematurely aging your skin). Sun restrictions may also be necessary.

What to Use:  Safe Acne Skincare for Mommy-to-Be 

If your acne is mild and you did not suffer from acne before becoming pregnant, you may actually try to deal with your pregnancy breakouts without any specific acne products. This route is by far the safest. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Avoid squeezing or popping pimples, cysts, blackhead or whiteheads. This may result in additional inflammation leading to skin damage and possibly permanent acne scars.
  • Limit washing your face (and body if you have body acne) to two times per day or after heavy sweating. Over-washing and over-drying your skin will actually stimulate sebaceous glands (it is a skin self-protection mechanism) to produce more oil.
  • When you clean your face or body, use a gentle, oil-free, alcohol-free, and non-abrasive cleanser. Try DIY chamomile astringent twice a day to keep your skin moist and bacteria free.
  • Use a soft washcloth (change it every time you wash) or cotton pads, but be gentle, and do not rub or injure your skin in any way. Micro-abrasions open the door, so to speak, for bacteria and may cause more breakouts.
  • Using lukewarm rather than hot water. Hot water will over-dry the skin and therefore stimulate the glands.
  • Avoid over-cleansing and over-drying; to dry your skin after washing, pat gently.
  • Use noncomedogenic moisturizer regularly twice a day.
  • Use natural DIY acne-prone skin masks.
  • Shampoo regularly. If you have oily skin, it’s best to shampoo daily. Avoid oily hair conditioners and heavy hair mousses.


Why Take a Risk?  An Alternative Option for Acne Treatment

If your acne is moderate or severe during your first trimester, you may opt for modest use of over-the-counter topical products that contain either benzoyl peroxide or glycolic acid. Topical agents’ impact on acne blemishes may be only temporary and not necessarily very effective for moderate to severe acne, and they are not believed to pose an increased risk of birth defects.

Many soon-to-be pregnant or pregnant moms come to us because they simply don’t want to take any risks.  Also, look into scientifically backed natural acne treatments that focus on rebalancing the body without directly impacting hormone levels.  You and your obstetrician should review the entire list of ingredients before you take anything so you can make sure that nothing will adversely affect you and your baby.

As we try to understand the etiology (causes) of acne, hormonal imbalance is cited as one of the most prevailing culprits contributing to this skin problem.

Both, women and men produce all three $e* hormones: estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. Of course, depending upon if you are a woman or a man, your glands produce more estrogen or testosterone. If a woman produces too much testosterone (androgens), this physiologic “over-dose” may result in symptoms such as acne, too much facial or body hair (hirsutism), patterned female baldness and sometimes changes in menstruation cycle or infertility.


How to tell if you have androgenal acne

When women’s acne accompanies the above symptoms, it is usually quite easy to determine that this acne is a result of too much androgens, which is “androgenal acne” or “androgen induced acne”. When other symptoms indicating too many androgens are not so clear, but there is a suspicion that indeed a hormonal imbalance is wreaking havoc on your body, a simple blood test may be able to determine levels of androgens as well as estrogen in your blood.

The increased levels of androgens cause the sebaceous glands to make excess sebum (skin oil) which can clog pores leading to the accumulation of dead skin cells and the growth of bacteria (P. acnes). This condition appears on the face as white heads and black heads (comedones). In certain situations, a local inflammatory response can lead to pustules and papules. If the inflammatory cascade reaches beyond the hair follicle where it originated, cysts are formed. These are painful and can lead to more severe damage of the skin including acne scars. Understanding that androgens play a pivotal role in the development of acne has led physicians to prescribe Spirinolactone (Aldactone) for acne treatment in women with suspected androgen induced acne.

Why Spirinolactone?

Spirinolactone (brand name, Aldactone) was originally developed in the 1960’s as a diuretic for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema in patients with congestive heart failure. A unique characteristic of spirinolactone was that unlike other diuretics approved at the time, patients did not lose potassium, and it was therefore labeled a “potassium sparing” diuretic. Aldactone’s mechanism of action involved the effect on the adrenal gland and a hormone that this gland produces called aldosterone. Aldosterone when released by the adrenal gland inhibits (decreases) the formation of urine and “preserves” water in the body. Aldactone being an aldosterone antagonist (opposite) increased urine formation helping those with high blood pressure or edema.

So what does this have to do with acne?

An observation was made in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that treatment with spirinolactone resulted in a decrease in hirsutism (facial hair), which was known to be associated with androgens. Further investigation revealed that spirinolactone has dual effects on androgens. Spirinolactone acts as an androgen receptor blocker (it blocks the influence of androgens on target organs), and it also decreases the production of androgens in the adrenal glands. As a result, Aldactone (spirinolactone) can reduce symptoms resulting from over production of androgens including androgen induced acne in women.

Spirinolactone Precautions

It is important to note that the use of spirinolactone is restricted to women since longer-term use in men results in feminization due to decreases in circulating testosterone levels. It is also important to remember that in women who are pregnant or anticipate becoming pregnant special care and attention needs to be paid since spirinolactone has been associated with teratogenesis (possible changes in a fetus).

From an acne treatment perspective, the goal for the use of spirinolactone is to reduce the impact of adrenal androgens on sebaceous gland secretions. Spirinolactone is therefore not recommended for women with acne associated with fluctuations in female sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone). Fluctuations in female sex hormones is common during puberty, the menstrual cycle, before and after child birth and lastly at the menopause. For certain individuals these fluctuations in hormone levels also seem to be associated with the appearance of acne. In some cases, physicians will prescribe oral contraceptives (OCs) to overcome or temper the fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels. Since OCs contain estrogen, and are associated with increased risks of thromboembolism (clots), care needs to be taken when using OCs for the control of acne.

A New Natural Prevention and Treatment Method of Acne:

But you’ll also find it in health food stores, and among widely recommended herbal products. Likewise, some say to avoid it, and others consider it part of a healthy diet or even the foundation of a vegan or vegetarian diet.

So what’s the deal? Is soy good or bad for our bodies and our skin?

There are certainly some health benefits of eating soy. Soybeans contain significant amounts of omega-3 and omega-6, and they are rich in vitamin E. Soy is also a complete protein, meaning it contains all the essential amino acids. It’s a good source of EFAs (essential fatty acids) too. The body cannot manufacture EFAs, so they must be supplied by the diet. EFAs are necessary for the proper functioning of all tissues and for tissue repair, especially the skin, since the EFAs hold skin cells together in a watertight seal and retain moisture.

Sounds great, right? So what’s the problem?

The majority of soy grown in the United States is genetically modified (GMO). The FDA does not yet require the labeling of GMO foods, so unless your soy is specifically labeled “non-GMO,” it’s likely that it’s GMO. There may be a nutritional difference between GMO and non-GMO, and in addition there is the possibility of negative, long-term effects of GMOs.

GMO soy may possibly cause inflammation in the body, leading to an exacerbation of acne. Even if the soy is in fact organically grown, it contains two estrogen-like isoflavones that may impact your system. Soy is indeed a hormone-like product and needs to be used in moderation.

Clinical and experimental studies examining the impact of soy or soy phytoestrogen consumption on human health have produced mixed and often conflicting results.
So, it would be misleading to say that soy is absolutely safe and healthy for everyone under all circumstances. The fact is, non-GMO soy in moderation may be fine for you. But, if you’re eating it with every meal and breaking out, there’s a chance the soy is only hindering your ability to get rid of acne once and for all.

Also, if you take estrogen (oral contraceptives contain estrogen) or your body has too much estrogen (estrogen dominance), soy may not be for you.

Estrogen dominance is often due to dietary, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Certain foods include xenohormones (hormones taken outside of the body), which can throw off hormone balance. Xenoestrogen is a big contributor to estrogen dominance. Low progesterone, which can be attributed to high stress, is also a typical issue in estrogen dominance. When your body is stressed, it produces higher amounts of the hormone cortisol in an effort to control the stress on the body. The increased cortisol reduces progesterone levels, which can cause estrogen dominance. Symptoms of too much estrogen include anxiety, allergies, breast tenderness, fatigue, headaches, weight gain and more.

Do men have to worry about this? Because they can interact with estrogen receptors, phytoestrogens have the potential to play a role in any biological process that involves estrogen. Until soy is not consumed in large quantities and for a long period of time, there is no compelling data proving that soy will affect male libido or fertility. Still, there is an open discussion about the fact that Asian men who have consumed large amounts of soy for generations have less body hair than Caucasian males. So again, moderation seems to be the key.

Staying Practical

Using soy-containing products in moderation will not be harmful for most of us. But if you already have some health issues including some types of acne, are using oral contraceptives, have estrogen dominance, or if you were planning on using soy cheeses and milk in all your holiday recipes, or replacing the holiday turkey or ham with soy protein products, you may want to reconsider.

And stay away from GMO foods at large if you can. Remember, they were originally developed to conquer world hunger not to replace everything we have been eating for thousands of years with alternative, more convenient versions.

Final Thought

Food does not cause acne. But the wrong foods may exasperate acne and the right foods may play an important role in helping to treat acne, as certain foods may be helping cleanse and nourish your skin from within. We all mess up sometimes. That’s life. But since your skin is the largest organ of your body, and a vulnerable one at that, it’s best to know what good things you can do to it, and what skincare no-no’s may eventually turn into bad habits that take a mighty toll on your skin.

Before we start, did you know that acne breakouts do not come from what you put on your skin and therefore cannot be treated by topical products? Most acne may be traced to fluctuations in hormone levels, especially androgens (male hormones, also known as testosterone), and their power to over stimulate sebaceous glands. As acne results from inflammation caused by sebum-clogged hair follicles (pores) and bacteria, ruling out the factors that cause overproduction of sebum is very important. If you want to break the acne cycle, you need to help the body to balance itself and stop over stimulating the sebaceous glands.

1. Using your Acne Treatment as Indicated
The weather has changed, and so has your everyday routine. Chances are you’ve got new activities and responsibilities on your plate, whether you’re a teen balancing fall sports and schoolwork, or an adult preparing for the holiday season. It is, hands down, the most important step in breaking the cycle of acne because consistent use of your acne treatments is crucial for improvement. To take advantage of this good fat, add foods like walnuts, avocados, flaxseed oil and salmon into your diet. To get that face of yours looking even better, eat berries and leafy green veggies all year round. Remember–you are what you eat!

4. Watering Your Skin
Water helps to remove internal toxins and hydrate your skin from the inside out. Though there is no definitive research that shows toxins lead to breakouts, researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia found that having about 2 cups of water per day significantly boosted blood flow throughout the body and skin. Your body needs to get rid of waste materials produced during metabolism, so if you cannot do it efficiently it may compromise your internal balance and even your immune system, leading to more breakouts. So drink up!

5. Exercising Right
You can get more than a rockin’ body from exercising. Exercise also helps to regulate your hormone levels (including insulin), reduce stress (which has been found to contribute to the production of acne lesions), improve circulation that delivers more oxygen to skin cells, carries cellular waste away and boosts your immune system. But, there’s a fine line–sweat from exercise can also lead to breakouts via skin irritation, and too much exercise may lead to higher levels of androgens, which are the single most potent stimulators of the sebaceous glands. So, it is very important that you show moderation and also make sure that perspiration-trapping clothes like sports bras, t-shirts, shorts, etc. are removed promptly. And don’t forget to take off makeup prior to working out and shower immediately after working out.


1. Sleeping with a Dirty Face
Have you ever noticed how people in the movies wake up in the morning looking flawless without having to wash their face the night before? It may be okay in the fictional world, but not in ours! A few minutes are all it takes to remove makeup, sweat, oil and dirt from your skin, which may help to control and even prevent inflammation. But remember–you don’t want to strip your skin of its essential oils by intense scrubbing and harsh cleansers. A mild cleanser is essential. Use of astringents or specialty oils such as chamomile astringent or coconut oil may be beneficial for you too. Then you can climb into bed looking ten times fresher than all those movie stars.

2. Popping Those Zits
One time–that’s right, just one time–may result in creating an acne scar. And many times may lead to many scars. Scars are irreversible. You can minimize the look of them (and in some instances, they can end up looking almost invisible after certain treatments), but they don’t go away. So don’t risk it!

3. Ignoring (or Avoiding) the Truth
Do you know exactly what your acne treatments are doing to your skin? Or the difference between that first thing you put on your face and that other thing you use after? We know you’re busy, but with today’s technology it’s easier than ever to be an educated consumer. Spend some time researching your products through trusted sources, and know this: Many treatments will only temporarily decrease symptoms. What acne sufferer doesn’t want that? But sometimes, things are too good to be true. Meaning if you don’t break the acne cycle by both treating existing acne and preventing it from coming, you will never really get rid of your acne.

4. Letting Money Hold You Back
Think about it: can you really put a price on your self-perception and confidence? Next time you think you’re experiencing sticker-shock, break the price down and figure out what it will cost you per day — in most cases, it could be less than that cup of coffee you can’t live without.

5. Going Bare-Skinned
Contrary to popular belief, acne will not improve when exposed to the sun. Exposure to UVA rays is the primary culprit behind aging and may even cause inflammation. Think you’re safe in the winter? Think again. UVA rays are around all year long. And because UVA rays can penetrate glass, you’re susceptible even when you’re indoors. Scary right? But you can easily protect yourself. Use the right sunscreen for acne-prone skin (those with zinc oxide will be particularly beneficial to your skin) and remember to choose a sunscreen of at least 20-30 SPF and labeled broad-spectrum. Make it part of your acne treatment regimen, and use it every day. If you want to also use a good makeup that contains the sun protection, that’s even better.

Bad habits and repeated slip-ups will only set you back on your journey to get rid of your acne, so make it a point to be GOOD to your skin!
