The woman, a student from Paris, bought a box of drugstore hair dye to do it herself. Estelle, 19, desired to go from blonde to brunette. She even performed a brief patch test to ensure she wasn’t allergic. 

The error she made during the patch test was not waiting the required 48 hours before coloring the hair. Instead, Estelle revealed that she proceeded to dye her locks after 30 minutes.

When Estelle awoke the next morning, her brunette tresses were dark alright, but her face and head began ballooning in size, causing her to have the shape of a lightbulb. She began itching her scalp continuously, and the advice from a pharmacist was to take antihistamines to reduce the major swelling. 

A few days later, and the problem got worse. The college student showed her mother her lightbulb head, and off she went to the emergency room. Estelle told Le Parisien magazine that she had suffered a serious allergic reaction. Doctors caught the condition in time and administered an adrenaline shot to help her heal. Estelle feared she could die as she had difficulty breathing. 

Estelle had developed what skin care experts call a common allergy. Synthetic hair dyes that are permanent contain a chemical called PPD (paraphenylenediamine). PPD is essential as an ingredient to turn light hair dark. It is legal and considered safe in hair color products. 

Only a tiny percentage of people are allergic, around 0.1% of the population, says a report by Action Against Allergy

Estelle is doing well but recommends the hair color industry become more transparent in the products they sell.  – A 2005 study performed by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology showed that English ivy can remove 78 percent of airborne mold in 12 hours.

Plant Care

 – Bright, filtered light is English ivy’s cup of tea. She will tolerate low light, but her leaves won’t be as green. She likes her soil on the dry side, so let her topsoil dry out between waterings. Feed her once monthly during the spring, summer, and fall with a 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer. She’s fond of hanging baskets.

With the arrival of spring, allergies increase dramatically. The best known, and most widespread, allergy is to pollen, often called seasonal allergy. We can fight them naturally, and cope with most symptoms. Sometimes it’s necessary to consult your doctor, who may refer you to an allergist for a complete examination to determine the degree and causes of allergies. You may respond well to medications if needed. Common allergy symptoms include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy irritated eyes, or fever, which can last several days.

Most remedies, prescription and homemade, will reduce symptoms without curing the allergy.
One guideline for reducing allergies is to avoid weakness in the immune system. It can help to strengthen the body’s defenses to better respond to the attacks.

• Eat at least the recommended amount of vitamin C according to the FDA, it’s found in fruits and vegetables including kale, oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, pineapple, lemons, berries, and tangerines. It’s better to eat the whole fruit rather than synthetic capsules of vitamin C whenever possible.

• Enjoy probiotics like kefir and yogurt. We have over 400 bacterial species in our bodies, most in our large intestine, many of which play an important role in preventing a wide range of disease. Probiotics are live microorganisms in food that have a beneficial effect on health. Kefir is made ​​from fermented milk, bacteria, and yeasts that help reduce allergic symptoms and strengthen the immune system. These are what is commonly known as good bacteria.

• Keep plenty of fish in your diet, enjoy at least three times a week, opting at least once for oily fish like salmon and sardines that provide anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids.

• Enjoy onions, leeks, and garlic to enhance breathing. In some cases, allergies cause nasal congestion, eating these foods helps fight that.

Tips to try to relieve allergy symptoms:
1- Breathing steam using herbs like chamomile, lemon balm, or eucalyptus help open breathing pathways.

2- Eat chili peppers, capsaicin is in garlic and hot peppers, it stimulates nasal secretion which helps get rid of the stuff clogging your nose.

3- Avoid being outdoors for extended periods of time during seasonal changes, especially on windy days and in the morning.

4- If you’re allergic to mold keep your home clean and dry, fix water leaks when they happen, and regularly clean refrigerator gaskets, which can accumulate fungi.

5- Skin allergies can be caused by make-up, soaps, and detergent.
Drink plenty of water, dehydration causes fluid retention which increases mucus.

To relieve and reduce swelling aloe vera works wonders, and is healthy, fresh, natural, and affordable.

Are you familiar with a preservative called methlisothiazolinone? If you use foundation, moisturizer, sunscreen, body wash, or shampoo, you’ve probably rubbed it on your hair or your skin, which may have led to a rash afterward!

Methylisothiazolinone or MI, sometimes erroneously called methylisothiazoline, is a powerful biocide and preservative within the group of isothiazolinones. MI is neurotoxic, causing damage to rat brain cells in tissue culture.

Unlike some synthetic chemicals this one isn’t just a mild skin irritant. A recent study found the chemical may be linked to nerve damage, and it’s known to be toxic in several other ways.

In order to inform consumers about the under-the-radar ingredients in their daily products, the American Contact Dermatitis Society announces an allergen of the year, this year the winner of the dubious title is the not-so-well-known methlisothiazolinone, which has recently been introduced to cosmetics and toiletries.

The biggest concern with this ingredient came to light when researchers conducted two recent laboratory studies on rat brain cells, and found that MI caused damage to those cells. The researchers stated, “a brief exposure to methylisothiazolinone, a widely used industrial and household biocide, is highly toxic to cultured neurons….”

The use of methlisothiazolinone increased dramatically in the past few years, often causing red bumps, itching, or rash after using that product.
Be careful the next time you chose what you are putting on your body, presentation is overvalued, opt for natural and organic treatments, homemade products can also be better for you.

How to avoid puffy eyes? Well, you need not worry, I am not going to tell you to stop partying or to stop eating certain foods. Although I should probably point out that doing this might help. No, today’s column is just some of my simple tips and tricks of dealing with those puffy eyes if you wake up in the morning and are faced with them. It seems to be a frequently asked question and with the holidays coming up I thought this might be timely.

Men and women alike can use these tips. We all suffer from allergies, sleepless nights, too much work and eating the wrong kinds of foods at times. So print out these nifty little tricks and remember the next time you wake up with puffy eyes try one of them.

Tablespoons. This is simply amazing how great it works. Run the back of the tablespoon under ice cold water, place on your puffy eyes (all you need is 30 seconds on each eye). This works so great, I recommend you carry a tablespoon in your bag or briefcase.

* Freezer. OK, I know you can’t carry a freezer around; but if you wake up with puffy eyes or a puffy face from overdoing it the night before (or OK, I know, allergies) simply open your freezer door and stick your head in it for 30 seconds. Just don’t allow anyone near you who might have a gripe with you.

Hemorrhoid cream. Well I guess this is versatile isn’t it? Yes a layer of hemorrhoid cream placed on the puffiness will soon have you looking perky again.

* Cucumbers, two slices of cucumber placed on the eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. Yes, this really does reduce puffiness.

* White eyeliner. I love this trick. I carry white eyeliner all the time. Place white eyeliner inside the eye and it will instantly make you look bright eyed and bushy tailed.

* Green tea and black tea. Besides all the other great benefits they contain fluoride and phenols which prevents plaque from forming on the teeth. After you’re done drinking the tea, squeeze out any excess liquid and use the cool tea bag in fact, take about 15 minutes (you must lay down for this) and place one tea bag on each eye to refresh your eyes. You can also run the bag all over your face to refresh yourself.

We all at some point suffer from puffy eyes. I would like to say that my favorite tip is the tea bag. This seems to have the best result for a longer period of time, at least in my own personal experience. Green tea is so beneficial, it is extraordinary for hair, skin, nails. It is full of antioxidants and gives such a boost to our metabolism.

In fact when I travel, I always make sure that I carry tea bags and white eyeliner with me. I must point out, in a pinch, when short on time the spoon trick also works very, very well.

One important point to leave you with: try sleeping on a satin pillow case. This nifty little trick should help reduce puffiness while you sleep and at least not be so harsh on your skin as you age. What kind of fabric you place your face on really does matter while you sleep.

I hope these tips help you throughout the holidays and remember folks, eating right and not over drinking is the best way to prevent puffiness.

Oh yeah, and a decent night’s sleep doesn’t hurt either. Have a fabulous, healthy day!
