Mustard Seeds

At my old job I had a Post-It with “mustard seeds” written on it on my computer. The Bible says faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. Because my life was actively falling apart I was grabbing that proverbial grain with all my might.  Some days that’s all I can find, that little tiny grain of mustard seed, but it’s enough. The Bible says it’s enough.

I find that if I close my eyes and picture that mustard seed gripped tightly in my hand while I stare at a trembling mountain I can usually find the rest of my faith, enough to get through anything. Not that I don’t sometimes think I am all alone in the world, I feel close to God, and I pray to head down the roads He tells me, but I am often stunned, and saddened, by the response from others.

I have taken care of people my whole life, I’m a born nurturer. That’s how I became Mama to so many people. I used to say I’m a mom first, a nurse second, and a bartender third, but no matter where I am I do the same thing, spread joy and try to make people feel better. When I was in a position that I really needed help myself I was honestly surprised by the total lack of help I was given from organizations whose whole job is to help people in need. One place flat out refused me because last year I made over $40,000. Well, it’s October and this year I have made 0.00. Nothing. Nada. Everything I have right now is by the grace of God. That’s my new career. I am a full-time child of God. Those people do not have to answer to me, I am not their judge and jury, but I worry about people who need help and cannot find their mustard seeds.

My job now is to try and inspire all of you who read this to do one good deed, to help someone, to pay it forward, to drop off a few things at a food shelf, to start a non-profit called Mama’s Mustard Seeds that actually helps people. All people. Without promises of pay back, without a financial statement, because someone walked in and said “Hey I need a clean shirt and a sandwich,” and the person there will say “Come right this way, we have shirts, we have food, come here and rest, it is our honor to help you my brother.”

I know, some days I am a big ball of corniness, but our sermon in church today was about God seeing us differently than we see ourselves, He sees the condition of our hearts.  Right now I am wearing yoga pants and an old Harley sweatshirt and my hair is in a ponytail, but I hope my heart is beautiful… it should be, it’s all filled with mustard seeds.
