Like Diet Coke? Here Is What 2 Cans A Day Do To Your Body

What Happens One Hour After Drinking A Can of Diet Coke

The holidays are over, and many of us have packed on a few extra pounds from all the pies and casseroles. After all, food is a great way to bring families together. However, with a new year comes resolutions, and it’s only fitting that our resolutions include losing some of the weight we put on during the last few months.

Unfortunately, this means cutting back on calories and possibly joining a gym. Luckily, if your favorite drink is Diet Coke, you don’t have to worry about giving it up. However, if you currently drink regular Coke, the thought of going without it can be depressing. In fact, you may actually be considering switching to Diet Coke. It’s the perfect solution, right? You are accustomed to having two cans per day at 150 calories per can. By switching to Diet Coke, you get the caffeine and sweetness of the regular drinks without the calories. Therefore, you can drink as many as you want without messing up your diet. Before you toss those regular Cokes in the trash and stock up on the sugar-free alternative, put your wallet back where it belongs and close the refrigerator door.

Diet Cokes have been proven to be very unhealthy and wreak havoc on the human body in more ways than one. These negative side effects are due to the large amounts of artificial sweeteners, such as Splenda and Stevia, being used as sugar substitutes. The aspartame in these products has been linked to heart disease, kidney decline, and diabetes, along with other health problems.

Kidney Decline

A Harvard Medical study of women who drink at least two cans of Diet Coke per day showed that these women began having a decrease in kidney function. Alternatively, women who drank Cokes sweetened with sugar did not experience kidney decline.

Heart Disease

According to an article in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, consuming at least two diet sodas and other artificially sweetened drinks per day increases a person’s risk of developing heart disease. While sugary soft drinks involve their own risk factors for cardiovascular problems, people who drink diet sodas are at greater risk for more intense trouble, such as heart attacks, strokes, and even death.

Diabetes

If you’re a diabetic, maybe that was the turning point in your life that brought you to diet cola instead of regular. While it may have taken some time to adjust to the change in taste, after some time, you probably grew to love it. At the time, it seemed like the perfect solution to your blood sugar problem, but the aspartame in the drinks can wreak havoc on your body. It confuses the body into thinking it’s consuming sugar. Therefore, blood sugar spikes will likely still occur, along with other problems that come from consuming artificial sweeteners.

Additionally, if you don’t suffer from diabetes, put down the Diet Coke before it’s too late. Studies show that diet beverages can actually cause metabolic issues. Drinking just one Diet Coke each day puts you at a 36 percent higher risk of developing high blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

Protecting Our Children

Time and time again we have been told that allowing our children to have sodas is bad for their health. It can cause weight gain and hyperactivity because of all the caffeine and sugar. In order to solve the problem while still making our little ones happy, many of us have switched our children to diet sodas. It seemed like a win-win situation until now. By giving our children diet drinks, we are setting them up for a wide array of health issues. We know that sodas are bad for their health, and now we know that diet drinks are even worse. Maybe letting them have a sugary beverage from time to time wouldn’t be such a bad thing as long as we continue to supply them with plenty of healthy drinks, such as water and 100 percent fruit juice.
