Health benefits of raisins

[Last updated: November 8th 2012]

Because of high fiber content, raisins are good aid in digestion. Also they’re abundant in minerals which are essential for bone health. More importantly, raisins are good source of antioxidants which fight against free radicals and help us to live younger and longer.

Now a new body of research shows that raisins help to stabilize the blood sugar levels and are helpful in people with pre-diabetes. Raisins are high in potassium, have a low glycemic index, and contain fiber, tannins, and antioxidants. A new research at the Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Center in Kentucky, USA shows that raisins significantly decreased the post-meal blood sugar levels by 16%. Also raisins significantly reduced the levels of HbA1c – a marker of inflammation – by 0.12%.

“Routine consumption of raisins 3 times a day may significantly lower [post-meal] glucose levels, when compared to common alternative equicaloric snacks.”
