I Love My Sister!

A sister is your first best friend, being a big sister is your first practice at being a mom, having a sister is one of God’s greatest gifts.  Having a sister is also your first practice in learning to get along without slapping each other, your first ally, and yet number one tattler.

The year that I turned 5 I wanted, more than anything, a Baby Alive doll. I had lots of dolls, this was just the newest craze and I wanted it. Well my birthday came, cake, presents, etc., no Baby Alive, I was so sad, so my mom handed me my new baby sister and said jokingly, “Here, take this, it’s a live baby and it’s even better.” I was already in love with her little face, and I took our mom literally. I put her in a cardboard box with a pillow, sheet, and blanket, and pulled her around the house. I attempted to be the one that fed her, changed her, dressed her, everything, she was the best present I had ever had.

I am 5 years older than my sister, so we didn’t always have a lot in common as children, but as we have grown older we grow closer and discover more and more common ground. My baby sister was born with a halo of golden curls, the curls are still there, in a lovely grown up brown.  I helped her learn to swim, tie her shoes,  and ride a bike. She waited by the front door when I started dating to tell mom if I had gotten a goodnight kiss or not.

My sister is technically my half-sister, she has other half-sisters as well, I think the half thing is silly. Jen is my sister, Sally and Emily are her sisters, and I consider them to be a sister as well. If you are very blessed in your life you have a friend or 2 that is as close as a sister, my BFF Nancy is like that, when I lived far away from my family I don’t know what I would have done without her. I have childhood friends that are like sisters to both of us as well.

Your sister is the person you tell everything to, you style each other’s hair, loan each other clothes and make-up, play dolls together, console broken hearts for each other, open your homes and lives to each other, and when you have children trade them back and forth as well.  Your sister is the one who knows best in all the world, the one you sang to sleep when she was little, the one you zealously tried to protect from bullies, broken toys, and shattered dreams. My sister calls me Nini or Mama Duck, I call her Baby Duck or Jenny.

Most of my lifetime favorite memories involve my baby sister, who is 5 inches taller than me now, and I hope that they remain so for years to come.
