Hospital Wedding

When 19 year old Courtney Sprenkle, a patient at Penn State Hershey with AML, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, stated her biggest dream was her perfect wedding, the nurses on 7 West got together and conspired to make it happen. The November 10 wedding had a beautiful bride in a gorgeous white dress, a handsome groom, Scott Shelly, gorgeous flowers, family and friends, and it took place in the surgical waiting room at Penn.

One of her nurses, Carol Magee, stated “If she wants it, we’ll make it happen.” One nurse baked cupcakes, others decorated, most of the food and decorations were donated, in an effort spearheaded by Carol and fellow nurses Kami Keller and Jennifer Strayer. After the ceremony they were picked up in an antique car on loan from the museum, and whisked away overnight to the Hershey Lodge, at least until 2 a.m., when they had to return to the hospital for Courtney’s chemotherapy.

The efforts of the nurses combined to get everything from rings and tuxes, hair and makeup services, to food and flowers donated, they called on the Jedediah Thomas Smith Foundation for additional help. Staff from the hospital even took pictures of the ceremony, which included 71 family members and friends.

Sadly, on December 2, Courtney lost her 2 year battle with cancer. The nurses who miss her take some comfort in the fact that they helped her fairytale wedding come true, happiness, however short, is enough.
