How long do hemorrhoids last? What to know

Hemorrhoids. The word alone has the power to bring able-bodied men to their knees. If you’ve ever had them, you know how things work. But if you’re one of the fortunate few who have escaped the wrath of these not-so-wanted visitors but wonder what the hype is all about, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s what you need to know about what they are and how long they last if you have developed them.

What are they?

Also known as piles, hemorrhoids can happen to anyone. They are swollen veins that appear in the lowest part of a person’s rectum and anus. In some cases, the walls of these blood vessels can stretch so thin that the veins will begin to bulge and become irritated. How long hemorrhoids last depends on how severe they are.

Causes

The veins that are around the anus stretch when they’re under and can end up either swelling or bulging.

Swollen hemorrhoidal veins can develop if:

  • You sit on the toilet too long
  • There is a strain during bowel movements
  • You are pregnant
  • You are obesity
  • You consume a low-fiber diet

Remedies

Before taking matters into your own hands, it’s a good idea to get a formal diagnosis. Since flare-ups can happen randomly, knowing how to soothe the pain naturally goes a long way to make sitting a little more bearable.

Sitz Baths

A sitz bath is when only the hips and buttocks are covered in water. Many medical professionals suggest that people who suffer from painful symptoms sit in warm water for at least 15 minutes a few times a day. It’s also highly recommended that you do so after a bowel movement.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is effective in itching, burning, and pain of swollen piles. While there isn’t a lot of scientific evidence to back this up, witch hazel does contain oils and tannins that help reduce the inflammation.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinehar is another natural alternative that reduces painful inflammation and itching. however, since it can be overly drying, always check with your physician prior to initiating treatment.

Prevention

There are plenty of ways to prevent swollen hemorrhoidal tissue. However, two of the easiest and most effective ways to stay hydrated and eating a diet that’s rich in fiber. Exercising regularly and not sitting for long periods of time help as well. Even the slightest change of your lifestyle can do your health a world of good.

At the end of the day, hemorrhoids aren’t pleasant to deal with but usually resolve with treatment. How long hemorrhoids last will depend on the severity and whether they are internal or external.

Regardless of type, if left untreated, they can cause severe issues. That’s why it falls to you to take preventative measures to make sure you don’t develop them.
