Lovemaking With a Yeast Infection: What You Should Know

[nextpage title=”…”]

If you have ever had a yeast infection, you know how uncomfortable it is and you’re not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a yeast infection will strike for approximately 75% of women in their adult years. Also known as vulvovaginal candidiasis or gen!tal vulvovaginal candidiasis, it involves abnormally high levels of yeast in a woman’s love organ. Yeast is always present in a woman’s private organ. It is a fungus and is usually only present in small amounts. When a woman’s body is in balance, a bacteria known as Lactobacillus acidophilus controls yeast levels at an acceptable level. However, it is easy to throw a woman’s system off balance.

Fluctuations in hormone levels, a switch to a new type of birth control, the use of antibiotics, or underlying conditions like diabetes can cause a shift in the production of yeast, causing an infection. The yeast fungus grows best in damp, warm conditions, so it’s no surprise that yeast infections do not only affect women. While it is rare as noted by Everyday Health, approximately 15% of adult men will experience a yeast infection in their lives. If it’s never happened to you, you’ll recognize it when the symptoms set in.

What are the Typical Symptoms of a Yeast Infection?
Whether a yeast infection affects a man or a woman, the most common symptoms are an uncomfortable burning sensation and itching in the genital area. It may even cause painful urination. Women often experience a discharge from the honey pot that is similar to cottage cheese. The discharge usually doesn’t have an odor, but it’s not pleasant. You can imagine that this can really get in the way when it comes to lovemaking.

What the Experts Say About Lovemaking and Yeast Infections
If you have a yeast infection and you are thinking about lovemaking, think again. Take some advice experts in the medical profession. Doctors recommend that you take a break from lovemaking if you have a yeast infection or suspect that you may have an infection. Consider five reasons why it’s not a good idea to have relations in the bedroom when you are infected with a yeast infection.

It’s Painful
If you think your yeast infection is making you uncomfortable throughout the day and the night, lovemaking will only make the pain and itching feel even worse. You won’t experience any pleasure and it’s unlikely that your partner will be happy when you are in pain. It may be disappointing for the both of you, but you need to get to the root of the problem and resolve it to avoid a painful situation.

You Could Pass it On to Your Partner
While it is rare for men to get yeast infection after lovemaking, it can happen. The last thing you want is to see your partner experience redness, itching, pain, and the awful burning that is your constant companion that comes with a yeast infection.

You Are at a Greater Risk of Getting an STD
Make no mistake. A yeast infection is not considered an STD. However, if you do not get your infection treated, you could open the door to STDs. Itching in private parts could cause you to rub or scratch too vigorously, resulting in tiny tears in your vag!nal tissue. This can make you more prone to STDs because its easier for them to enter your body. Not only will an STD put you at risk, you’ll also be risking your partner.

You Need to Let Your Medicine Go to Work for You
Doctors often prescribe a cream to treat yeast infections. If you are using a cream, you need to avoid lovemaking. Otherwise, it could make your medication ineffective and result in a yeast infection that hangs on indefinitely, leading to even more problems that you do not want to face.

You Could Find Yourself Having Yeast Infections More Often
A study was performed at the University of Michigan in 2003 and found a possible connection between saliva and yeast infections. If saliva is a part of your lovemaking, it could make things worse when it comes to yeast infections. You could find that they are a chronic problem to the point that you are caught in a vicious cycle of discomfort that never seems to go away.

The bottom line is lovemaking and yeast infections are not a good mix. Although medical professionals will tell you it’s not dangerous for the most part, especially if you or your partner are using some type of external protection, it’s not a pleasant experience. The best thing you can do is go to the doctor, get a proper diagnosis, and treat your yeast infection. When it has cleared up, lovemaking will be much more enjoyable for the both of you.
